There is really no way to count denominations, because different people would have different ideas about what constitutes a denomination. If you use only those that have some sort of central group in authority, then what of the ones that are "independent Bible churches" which nevertheless are quite similar in doctrine? Do you count Southern Baptist and American Baptist as one or two? Methodist and AME? And so on.
But yes, when they say Christianity is the largest, they are counting all those, Protestant and Catholic. And don't forget Eastern Orthodox, of which there are several sub-groups, and many, many individuals who are firmly Christian but do not go to any church or belong to any denomination. There are a great many of those.

These are the 5 Major branches of Christianity.
1. Roman Catholic
2. Eastern Orthodox
3. Oriental Orthodox
4. Anglican
5. Protestant
Every church established to this date are branched off from these 5.
Different people have different stylistic preferences. For example, one group may appreciate symbolic rituals and trappings, while others consider those distracting. One group may prefer contemporary music, while another may have trouble with the volume or the unfamiliarity with the tunes. People who came from a background where rock music meant drugs and free sex may not be comfortable with contemporary Christian rock music. Some people like the Charismatic style of worship, while others may have bad memories of bad churches that emulate Charismatic styles.
Different denominations wind up with different minor emphases in their services for these and other reasons. One person called them "house rules." This can work out well, as long as those separate "house rules" aren't used to build walls of self-righteousness against other Christians.
Denomination is nothing more than a division in the Christian faith.

Truth is nobody knows...there are upwards 15000+ Christian denominations or abominations as some people like to call them, plus unknown numbers of small churches set up in self-appointed ministers sitting rooms scattered world-wide, all disagree with each other on certain parts of Bible doctrine...can't be a very accurate text the Bible can it? it seems to be open to endless subjective interpretation, just look at the division and exclusion Christianity creates even among it's own.
Yes, all Christian denominations are included.

It relies upon in case you contain the early church, there have been somewhat some Christian communities lower back then which does no longer be seen Christian in the event that they sprang up right this moment (The Gnostic cosmology became considerably diverse on how they seen the god of Abraham). maximum could accept as true with Jesus as "'son' of 'god'" and 'messiah', yet although, there is a few on the perimeters that don't. The resurrection is likewise an extremely user-friendly perception. Virgin delivery isn't that important. And what "unique sin" potential varies very much. that's a complicated taxonomy. it is like attempting to assert what's in user-friendly between an Reform Judaism, Orthodox Judaism, and Judaism as practiced till now King Josiah. If I had to place it into words, i could say that all of them have self assurance that Jesus, a Jewish dude who lived in first century Levant, became uniquely important, divinely so, in forgiving mankind of their incorrect nature. i think of that covers even the early gnostics. Oh, additionally he have been given accomplished by utilising the government, undesrvingly so.

There are about 38,000 different Christian religious groups if you omit the smallest ones of under about 500 persons. They all say that they are Christians, (and they are !) but have differnt views on spirituality, Theology, philosophy, politics, goals, etc.
Since God had made each of us human persons absolutely UNIQUE -- without duplicate in time or in eternity -- each human person will have an unique personal God-conscious experience. In that sense, there are now about 6.5 billion different personal religions. That is good and God approves. He does not like stereotyped, restrictive dogmas forced upon any group; each of us has full God-given spiritual liberty.
Presently, Christianity is the number one most popular religion with about 2.3 billion humans worldwide. Ther next most popular religion is Islam with 1.2 billion humans. Judaism is now only about 15 million religious Jews or less. They tend now to be more secular, or they will convert to a growing religion. Sikhism is still dynamic and growing, as it is combining and unifying different religions together.
All persons who say they are Christians and try to seek and to follow Jesus Christ, are Christians. Only very unspiritual Christians claim that they are the one "True Christian", and all other 38,000 or more Christian groups are false.
Some day, the vast majority of Christians will be unified and growing even faster. The Catholic church will have to drop having a pope, saints to pray to, and must allow priests to marry, or it will die out increasingly faster. Many Catholics switch to Pentecostal or other Christian denominations, or practice personal religion in their home with family and friends.
"Priesthood of all believers in Jesus" is true and is growing.
True religion (of any type) is to know God as your loving Father and each and every human as your Brother in the Family of God. Our Father God has only one Family Fellowship, not many. His Door is now open within you here and now.
Peace and progress,

To answer your question: Too many.
But read your Bible, there is still only one Church; all who believe and trust in God, and the salvation earned by his son Jesus are members of the "Holy Christian (catholic) and Apostolic Church" as we confess in the Nicene Creed; regardless of denomination. Martin Luther called this the Invisible Church; lead by Christ, made up of believers and only believers, both living and dead (the Communion of Saints).

Christianity .... IS NOT.... the Biggest 'religion!'
....... " POLITICS..... IS !
In Christianity there are ONLY TWO Sects......!
The Real..... and the .... FALSE !
The Real are Born Again.... and .... Believe the BIBLE.... and its complete Authority for the Real Believer !
The FALSE...... Simply believe their Pastor, Priest or Leader....their DENOMINATION DOCTRINE... and... DO NOT HOLD TO THE WORD OF GOD!
(Matthew 24:35) The heaven and the earth shall pass away, but My Words shall not pass away.
(Luke 4:4) And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written that "man shall not live by bread alone, but by every Word of God."
Thanks for Asking ! RR
