My dog is licking and biting his fur out. He has two large bald patches either side of his tail and is constantly licking. I've treated him for fleas and ticks to no avail. I have heard about a product called benzadryl. Does anyone know where I can get it from?

These bald patches are sometimes called "hot spots". Sounds like a problem my dog had before we found out he had an allergy to fleas. You can get the medication you refer to at the druggist, some farm supply stores carry it, too. Or check with your vet. You also might want to consider using a monthly flea deterrent such as Frontline brand.

What exactly have you treated him with? The likelihood is you haven't used a useful treatment (i.e you've bought something from a store) and the dog still has fleas.

It's Benadryl, and there's no point using it if you're not removing the source of the itching. I suggest you get the dog to a vet and get him properly checked - if it isn't fleas, it could be many other things, like allergies, skin infections, mites, hormonal problems - even anal gland impaction if he's biting either side of his tail. You can't treat until you know what the problem is, and you won't know unless you go to a vet.

You can pick up proper flea/tick treatment i.e Frontline without taking the dog to the vet.

Your dog needs to see a vet. Allergies are the most common itching problem and can be treated with relatively inexpensive medicine. It could also be several other medical problems that if treated with the wrong meds could be harmful or at least ineffective while the condition gets worse.

You can use cortisone cream to help alleviate some of the itching in the meantime. But this is just a "band-aid" not a cure.

What have you used for flea treatment? This sounds like flea allergy. It only takes one flea bite for an allergy with a dog that is allergic to fleas.

your are talking about BENADRYL ( a HUMAN antihistamine)

bring your pet to the vets/groomers for proper skin treatment and get the fleas out of your house too

switch to a high quality dry food also

when we first got our puppy he had a place on his tail like this. we got rid of the fleas.. then we went to wal mart and bought some kind of liquid for "hot spots". we put it on his tail three times a day and it seemed to get rid of it.

Take him to the vet. He either has fleas or he is anxious.
