I found a kitten today! i brought it around my two cats. A 5 year old mother cat and her 8 month old kitten. The kitten i found is a bout 4 months old. The mother did not like the kitten i brought home at all she hissed and became very upset. I put the kitten in a bathroom in my house until i take him to the vet. Later that nighti was holding her kitten and she started hissing at it and when her kitten started to walk away she attacked it and swatted at it. Why is my cat acting in this way? I don't know what to do. She is usually very friendly with her baby. Helppp.

First of all I'd like to say KUDOS to you for bring home a lost kitten! Your cat probably does want another cat in the house. Give them some time to adjust to one another. Make sure you continue to give the 5 year old cat and her baby plenty of attention. When you take the kitten for it check up, see if the vet has any suggestions.

When I came home with a 5 week old kitten and my cat, that's not quite a year and a half old, was not at all pleased. The kitten was hissed and growled at, but it continued to go over to the cat. Things got alittle nastier between the two, the cat was now swatting and hitting the kitten. Apparently the kitten wasn't being hurt, because it keep going back to the cat. The kitten continued and the cat became more aggressive i.e. the cat would grab (bite) the kitten's neck and hold it down for a few seconds. Well it wasn't too long before the cat stopped fighting. I guess it just accepted the fact that the kitten wasn't going away. We'd had the kitten for about 4 weeks and it's persistence has paid off... the cat allows the kitten to snuggle up and nap with it.

A few years back I had a male and then came home with another male cat which did not do as well, They did learn to live together or should I say cohabitat under the same roof. It took alittle while, but they did learn to respect one another. They just sorta stayed out of each other's space and basically ignored one another. Once in a while I might of heard one give the other a growl, but that was about it ... no fighting ... just a warning and they'd go about their business.

I sure your cats will be able to adjust in time.

A cat's life is all about smells. My husband and I have raised Scottish Fold cats as a hobby. A friend of ours raised American Curls. Her mother cat got sick and she gave me the kittens to foster on one of our momma cats. The kittens were only about a week apart in age. What I had to do was take momma cat's blanket and rub it all over the foster kittens so they smelled like they belonged. It was the cutest litter. There were Scottish Fold kittens with both folded and straight ears and American Curl kittens with curled ears. Momma cat didn't care -- all she knew was that they all needed to be washed. We were all so busy we forgot to take pictures.

If you want the kitten to fit in, you probably did the right thing putting him in the bathroom. That will be much more comforting to him because small spaces are comfortable to cats. Then if you will take whatever your other cats sleep on and rub it on the kitten it will help him smell like he belongs. In the bathroom he will be able to get used to the smells and sounds of your home in a non-threatening manner. After a week you can open the door, but don't move his stuff out right away. He may need a refuge.

There will be a certain amount of hissing and slapping because cats are very heirarchial and the in-charge cat needs to make sure everybody knows it. Hence the slapping of the 8 month old. They'll work it out eventually, but it may take a long time. Sometimes all they'll do is tolerate each other. As long as momma cat gets the respect she demands, all should be well.

I would suggest taking the new kitten to the vet. Animals know when other animals are sick. If there is something wrong with it, that's why she is swatting at it; to keep it away from her kitten.

Since the kitten is not hers, she may not accept it.

She probably swatted her kitten because it smelled like the other and it confused her.

She is just angry. Don't worry. She probably got confused or she just took it out on her child. Give her time, let the young ones play together and eat together, and gradually the mother. keep them separately while you are away. This procedure took us 1 month, but now our 3 cats get along fine. But first de-flea and deworm the new kitten.

She smelled the scent of the new cat on her kitten.....its happend with me before. You just have to slowly introduce the new cat with your mamma cat, supervising the visits a little at a time, and soon your mamma cat will be comfy with the new kitten.

more or less it sounds like old fashioned jealousy, my cat of only one mth gets mad at me for going outside and feeding a few strays. cats are very possesive , introduce them slowly in time hopefully they will get along
