the AF does indeed make you choose 5 fields and they will place you into one of them. it is VERY hard to get a guarantee of ATC in the AF, and they may very well tell you thanks, but no thanks if you are job locked.
of course, the Navy will tell you the same thing. IF you qualify, you can request the A school for AC, but you may only be in DEP for 12 months. if there are no slots available, you cannot get that in your contract.
ANY recruiter will be less willing to work with someone who only wants what they want and not what the military needs.
Greg: ALL Branches have the ability to guarantee training in a specific Field. the Army doesn't have the lock on that. It's just that the need may not be as great for whatever a potential recruit wants, and that is where problems arise.

Yes you can get a guaranteed job in the Air Force. Your recruiter will push for you to choose five different jobs that you would be happy with in order for you to enlist sooner and that way you dont back out. Really, you have no commitment to the military to you sign the bottom line and make your oath. You might have to sit on the Delayed Entry Program for a while waiting for a slot for your job to open up, but once it does open up, you can get it guaranteed.
Reasons for not being able to guaranteed job.
1. Position is overmanned.
2. You do not qualify for the position.
3. The position is not available at your MEPs at the time being.

Well it sounds like the Air Force is probably the right choice for you guys. Fueling aircraft is an option. Needed everywhere, kind of boring, but he'd be home every night and not stressed out. Air Defense Artillery is another option. Just push a button to launch a missile. Most exciting job without being gone all the time is probably a UAV pilot (Unmanned Autonomous Vehicle). Basically flying a spy plane from a video screen. Your boyfriend like video games? UAV pilot, trust me.

Yes you can get a guaranteed job written up in your contract. You may have to wait for a slot to open in that field but you can be in the DEP for a year. If your recruiter is telling you no they are lazy and not doing their job, find a different recruiter. If you dont you will get put where the Air Force wants you, not where you want to be and that can make for a bad military experience being in a job you dont want.

I would expect the recruiter to know the latest information.
When I enlisted, guaranteed job assignments were available, but not for every career field.
I wanted computer avionics, it was not one that was available. I went in on a guaranteed eletronics, picked my five choices, and wound up being a Television Repair Specialist. I didn't even realize the Air Force had TV repairmen.
It all worked out pretty good though, served 8 years and loved every day.

Yes, it is possible. When you go to MEPS for your physical and to swear in, they will sit you down and offer you what's available based on your qualifications and their needs. My husband was at MEPS a week ago and Air Traffic Control was one of the 5-6 jobs he was offered. That doesn't mean, however, that it will be available when you go. There is also a long wait to leave for basic training, my husband doesn't leave until the middle of March. Good luck!

as long as you are a grad or a senior, have no serious law violations you should be able to have your job guaranteed for you at the recruiting station without ever having to go to the MEPS (Military Entrance Processing Station).
oops you think im talking about the AF ... sorry, no, the only one who can do that for you is the ARMY recruiter. and yes you can qualify for air traffic controller, as the army has more aircraft in the air than the air force or the navy for that matter.
i know im going to hear all of you tell me im wrong but i can prove it.

Yes, it is possible. However, the needs of the Air Force come first.
A guaranteed job might require that you wait for a 'ship' date, or leave earlier than you wanted.
You choose the 5 most desirable to you. That way you have a better chance of a job that you want.
All branches operate the same basic way.

Michael P is correct. I'm not sure why you recruiter is telling you different. Please don't sign anything. Let the AF guy know that the Navy is offering you ATC and see if he can't match the offer.

Possible, maybe. Probable, not likely.
