She's 21 months old and has had a fever since yesterday. She's been off her food - except milk and occasionally cheerios - and is more clingy and tired than usual, but otherwise no real symptoms. I've been giving her nurofen for children to help keep her temperature down... should I call the doctor or wait and see?

Thanks for the NHS direct suggestion - I went to the website and followed the yes/no guide to fever in children - as she doesn't have any other symptoms apart from a runny nose they say it's fine to self treat. She's sleeping now, but If she's still poorly this afternoon I'll call the number.

Thanks!

Karen H - Yes she is a brave little person! She hardly ever cries when she falls over and has been so good about being poorly.

As a mothers we seem to know when our kids are in need of medical attention, Do you think you need to ring a doctor? As parents we know our kids better than anyone else, and if you are in the slightest would, then either ring your doctor, and speak to him over the phone, or ring NHS direct if you in the UK 0845 46 47. They will ask you questions, and will help you.

But if you are really really worried, worried so much you are panicking, then go to the doctors. You know your baby better than anyone else.

On a funny note, if your daughter is anything like my ones when they were little. When you get to the doctors, she will miraculously get better, and run around playing with other kids and playing with toys, and make you look like a liar.
I used to feel so shamed, and the doctor would laugh at me and told me that kids do that to their poor parents, keep them up all night, and worry parents sick and when you take them to the doctors or hospital, they are back to their normal selves lol.
But seriously, you know your daughter, what do you think you should do? 0845 46 47

Depends on the temperature. A little probably no problem. Kids can run a fever for lots of reasons, teeth is a good excuse. But also watch her breathing, if is an allergic reaction to something it could get serious. Cheerios are great, but the milk could aggravate her sinus and lungs. And if she already has mucus could make that worse. I'd rather wake that doctor than something happen to my darling.

If that temperature gets too high, then grab the rubbing alcohol and wet her down with it.. it takes down the temperature.. My son had a temp and the doctor said he was fine, just an ear infection, next thing I new he had a convulsion from his temperature going up fast.

Rubbing alcohol is what they used in the hospital and a fan to keep his temp down.

She's probably just caught a cold or flu' .. but keep an eye on her

take care

Sounds like a cold coming on. Mine's been like that a few days. I'd bet tomorrow it's be full blown.

Wait and see. Keep the Meds handy. Humidifer always helps. Mine needed Amox to help with the infection.

Heavy congestion and labored breathing is a serious indication for a child that young. Keep a close eye on her.

Good Luck

If you feel worried I would speak to the Doctor. Have you heard of Calpol ? Its for children and it excellent, really good for keeping high temperature down and also teething.

It comes in a bottle , a pink liquid. If she is really warm cool her with a face cloth soaked in just warm water. If in any doubt phone the doctor this morning . Weekends are the worst time for doctors.

Good luck -let us know how she is

If he temperature is really high I would call a Doctor, otherwise give her some calpol etc and keep a close eye on her. If she gets any other symptoms take her straight away and if it doesn't go soon, then take her.

I hope she's feeling better soon :)

If you are in England call NHS Direct for advice on 0845 4647.

They freak you out when their first question is 'is the child still breathing' because you think you have been put through to some emergency hot line - but they have to ask that even if you are ringing because Johnny;s finger is stuck in the door.

I wouldn't be too worried if I were you - my son quite often gets a temp and doesnt have any other symptoms, if he's happy I just keep an eye on him and let him get on with it - I think as a mother you know when your kids are really ill - and if you thought that you'd have taken her already by now :D

Call dr when it reaches 102 and/or higher
You can put a bag of frozen corn or peas on her forehead and wrapped in a towel under her arms to get the temp down instead of meds.
