Have you ever operated a DSLR before? Do you plan to take pictures in the US?

A DSLR needs at least basic photography skill so you can exploit its potential. Lack of photography skill would means that you'll be having problems taking picture (look around at this section and you'll see people asking stuff about their DSLR settings) and if that's the case, then I would recommend you to get the camera in the UK and take some time to learn and adapt to your new camera so you won't screw up yourself when you want to take important pictures during your holiday.

The Nikon D40 is a good piece of camera, but I would suggest you not to buy the camera on an online site unless you have tried it with your own hand. Camera is a very personal thing for photographers and there is a chance that you're not going to like it, or liking another camera such as the Canon 400D or a higher class Nikon for example. Go to a specialized camera store and ask around. I'm sure they'll be glad to help you. Also compare prices too while on the way. You'll be thankful for this.

Hope this helps.

If you buy your camera in the USA, NikonUK may not honor the warranty. All the camera manufacturers have licensed subsidiaries in different geographic areas. These are the official importers and they pay more for the Nikon or Canon or Pentax or Olympus products they import to support the warranty coverage.

Although its perfectly legal for an importer to buy Nikon or Canon, etc. cameras and lenses in countries with a favorable exchange rate and then sell them cheaper than the official importer, they seldom tell the consumer there isn't warranty coverage. This practice is called the "gray market".

So even though you may realize a savings buying a camera in the USA, if you need warranty service when you return to the UK, you'll likely have to send your camera back to the USA.

Canon released the same camera with different designations to fight the "gray market". Nikon probably does the same.

Japan: Canon EOS Kiss Digital X

America: Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi

Europe, Asia, Oceania: Canon EOS 400D Digital

I suggest you contact the Nikon dealer in your area and ask if Nikon will honor the warranty in the UK if you buy a Nikon in the USA.

its a good camera although i have seen it advertised at £299 in Curry's. it would probably be easier should anything go wrong with it to buy it from the UK. remember a digital SLR is a totally different camera form the old film SLR's. much more to go wrong with them.

have a look:
