My son will be 2 on the 23rd and has just learned yesterday to climb out of his crib. With the dresser about a foot away, he has learned to climb from the crib to the dresser. I have moved his crib for safety concerns, but the climbing has continued.

So I am wondering what type of bed to get him. I would like to use his crib mattress since he has started potty training. Plus he is a MOVER at night. I have looked into the rails to put on the bed, but I am afraid he will slip out of the open part.

I would like anyone who has converted to a toddler bed to reply with what they purchased and how it worked for them. Money is an issue and I do believe paying more than $150 for a bed he will out grow in a couple of years isn't worth it. His room is on the small side so it will have to go up against a wall with a closet door. Thr crib fits there with a small 3 shelf bookcase from target (the white cublicle ones on the website).

Any help would be great. Thank you.

I have looked at lot on ebay and there are heaps of toddler beds going for very reasonable prices so that may be a start for you. You can also ask the seller if its possible to view the item prior to bidding to make sure it is worth buying. Most of them have the rails on them already and are so close to the ground that falling our really isn't a problem

To transition our kids we took the drop-down side of the cot off first and put the guard rail there with some padding on the floor incase he fell off. (didn't actually happen but was a precaution.) This will stop the climbing for starters and get them used to the bed style rather than boxed in cot.

Be prepared that your son may get in and out of bed for the first few nights until he gets used to it but just take him back, tuck him in and hopefully he will stay in bed.

I am in australia so I can't really help with actual beds to buy but I hope this helped. Ebay really is a good start if money is an issue. Toys-r-us in Australia also has some great themed toddler beds (cars, cinderella, nemo etc...) and they have them in packages and separate for very cheap.

best of luck

if money is an issue then you buy a normal bed with a side rail and the part at the bottom that is open you put the cot matteress on the floor there. If he falls it is a soft landing. The other side is pushed against a wall.

Twin bed with a raild would be very good.He will have a lot of space to move,he will sleep in it for a very long time. You can put pillows where the opening is.You can save the toddler bed for your next child.
