or would you just buy the box ready ones? If you make them from scratch, do you have a recipe for garlic cheesey mashed potatoes?

Hubby loves the boxed ones but I'm not into chemicals and preservatives. Plus I found in the year since I got married that I LOVE to cook. I just haven't tried mashed potatoes yet.

i think it is worth it . I like the homemade mashed potatoes better than the dried box ones. Just something about the butter and all the fresh ingredients that make them special.
just put some roasted garlic and cheddar cheese in your mashed potatoes is all i do plus i add a little sour cream to make them better also.
you can buy roasted garlic now if you want it quick otherwise take a bulb of garlic cut about a half inch off the top to open up the cloves drizzle a little olive oil on top wrap up in foil and bake in the oven until it is soft and sweet. Then squeeze the cloves out in your mashed potatoes when you are mashing them ;add some grated cheddar cheese ,your hot milk and butter, salt and pepper to taste . sour cream if you want and stir all together. I like mine with a few skins left on the potatoes just so people know i made them from scratch.

Is it worth it to make mashed potatoes from scratch? Absolutely. There is nothing like true mashed potatoes, which you won't get from instant and most premade store bought. And if you want to try for garlic cheese mashed potatoes, try adding some garlic powder (or minced garlic) and grated cheese to freshly mashed, making sure the potatoes are still nice and hot. Stir them in, the heat from the potatoes should melt the cheese.

Best to make your own.

Gently heat cream with garlic cloves in it, simmer it , don't boil.
Boil peeled potatoes in salted water until fork tender
Drain potatoes and let them dry a little on the still warm stove before you mash and add a little of the cream at a time until it's the consistency you like. While it's still hot mix in shredded Parmesan cheese or the cheese of your choice.
Salt and pepper to taste, after the cheese if you use Parmesan, that's salty.
Don't over mash or they turn into paste.

Yes it is worth making mashed potato from scratch. Instant just doesn't have the right taste.

LOL you guys are a hoot.

Do you have potatoes down under? We get them from the market or farm roadside shops.

The "real" ones are definitely better than the boxed ones, since they are easy to cook and make. Going through all the measuring and all gets rather much don't ya think?

Absolutely make your own.
To help make them really fast and easy. Buy a potato ricer.
peel potatoes and boil till tender,
in a bowl have heated milk or cream and melted REAL butter and salt.
drain potatoes and put through ricer into milk and butter.
stir and add garlic or cheese or whatever you like.
This way you don't beat the potatoes till they are like glue.

For vegan, you can substitute rice milk and canola margarine .
Still delicious.
I make 5 pound of potatoes at a time and my family eats them all.

Oh lord, from scratch, woman! boxed sucks monkey butt. Just skin em, crush em, add some milk, beat em, add more milk as needed to keep em creamy, add some butter, and put in as much garlic and cheese as you want, though i would keep the garlic to a minimum. i guess if i were doing it i would just do it in increments and taste test every so often. a recipe for mashed potatoes just seems wierd to me.

Scratch - the boxed ones are just not good at all, but homemade, buttery yummy mashed potatoes are a treat.

Well do you like potatoes that taste delicious (real potatoes) or potatoes that taste like chemicals (boxed)? Do a search for cheesy mashed potatoes at foodnetwork.com and you'll find a good recipe.
