find daily calorie intake calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 400-600cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours - it optimizes your metabolism)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day (have lots of veggies to eat in between meals if you are still hungry)
8 glasses of water -carry bottle of water with you and when you feel hungry drink it - we often confuse hunger with thirst (our bodies confuse it)
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have protein (lean meat, legumes etc) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio is the only fat burning exercise and burns fat all over your body (running, jogging, swimming, spinning, elliptical etc) 4-6 times a week for average of 45min, light weight training a few times a week (more muscle=faster metabolism)
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, pasta etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, ice cream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
of course you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)

Dark green veggies (spinach salad or spring greens) with an organic (natural and without High fructose corn sweeteners), oil and vinegar dressing. Lots of fruit, veggies, whole grains.
NO SODA, diet or not, or anything else fizzy. The carbonation is bad for you. It should be a treat, not a staple.
And get moving, exercise will do lots, even if you don't cut calories. Aim for 5 hours of vigorous exercise a week.

My philosophy is very simple....avoid anything with refined sugar, animal fat and starch. This includes potatoes, bread, chips. In terms of the way the food is cooked is also important...avoid deep fried food. Go for steamed, grilled or boiled items. Try to eat more salads (without the high fat dressings. go for vinegar and olive oil) and eat only when you feel hungry. It is better to take small frequent meals, than pig out on say 3 full meals a day. Drink more water, so that you feel full and eat slowly, so that your stomach can send signals to your brain that it is digesting the food. I'd love to share more of my tips in my personal blog at www.bodyhealthadvisor.com

My wife has severe artheritis, thriod problems, and after 3 kids was having all kinds of problems controling her weight.
She found a diet that cured her artheritis, got rid of her throid problems, and helped her loose 100 pounds in a year.
She cut out white sugar, white flower, all refined and processed foods, which for some people is their entire diet.
and some kinds of red meat. And she ate lots of nuts, and salads. but no salad dressing since that is under the catigory of refined and processed food.
She found something interesting, it wasn't how much or how little she ate that caused the weight to come and go, she could eat as much as she wanted, it was what she ate.
When she was strict, she lost weight fast, when she cheated, her artheritis came back, and the weight stopped falling.
Hope that helps, If it does, can I have 10 points

Lots of protein - Lean chicken, turkey, fish, beans
Unlimited vegetables - raw or steamed
Green salad
Green tea or oolong tea - freshly brewed, not the bottled stuff to boost metabolism
Whole wheat pasta w/ marinara sauce or brown rice for fiber
Regular cardio exercise, walking, jogging and/or weights. Any exercise that works for you. Just stay active.
