do i need to solder to make a good connection w/ the wires in the headphone cords?

or what's an easier way to make a good connection?

Lots of tricks are used in making cords like this thin and flexible. It can make them very hard to work with. Some of them make soldering nearly impossible. I don't know what you're trying to do, but repairing a headphone cord might be very difficult.
