The only good thing the weasals who actually think they did something good for the American people is by raising the wages and telling us they pulled it off with a sh eating grin is the only thing they actually did at all and I do not think it amounts to anything to help the American people. Have you noticed when you get a raise in minimum wage (like how do you live on that?) All busnesses raise their prices some are raised double . so noone benefits a thing but maybe they take more taxes out. They just laugh at us and we all just take it from these weasel's who need to be replaced they are not for us it's all about them! Call them the do nothing clan who is slowing destroying America if we do nothing about it,don't vote for people who do more damage and blame the next guy

(hopefully this will not get erased again)

States with higher minimum wages have more unemployment and less home ownership. American voters don't seem to understand inflation so it is the primary mechanism of subtle tax increases and benefit cuts.

Political economics is a shell game - government doesn't create food OR tables, they just figure out clever ways to make them more expensive while looking like compassionate souls.

Your argument is based on a fundamental misunderstanding of what the minimum wage is for and what it does. The minimum wage is raised to reflect inflation--it doesn't precede it. Again, that's been the case for over 70 years. Minimum wage standards actually affect few workers and have virtually no impact on the payrolls of legitimate businesses. That's because repugable businesses are already paying nearly all of their workers at or above the new minimum. Go back and look at the economic history and you'll see I'm correct. The minimum wage is directed at businesses that are unethical. These are businesses that--if they are allowed to get away with it--wil exploit vulnerable workers by paying them wages that are well below the going market rates. Again, take a look at the people who are whining about increases in the minimum wage. You'll find they either don't know what the minimum wage is and what it does--or they are dishonest businesspersons or so incompetent they can't pay fair wages and still make a profit.

Minimum wage is a double edged sword, unlike the first person to answer your question you seem to have somewhat of a grasp on it. It is good in that it prevents employers from paying too low of a wage. Any increase in the minimum wage is followed by an increase in the cost of living, i.e. businesses raising prices. The more employers are forced to pay their employees the more they are forced to raise prices and cut the hours of their employees. Any benefit that would come from a wage increase is offset by the increase cost of living and reduction of hours, so nothing is really gained.

In Washington state the minimum wage is 7.93 an hour and increased every year according to inflation. One of the more unsound decisions the voters of this state have made. The only time the increase helped is when it first became law and minimum wage went from 5.15 to 6.50 an hour in the middle of the year. But that doesn't really concern many people these days, all they can think about is getting more money in the pockets of the poor. But if the cost of living keeps going up what good does that extra dollar do?

Raising the minimum wage is an artificial way by the government in controlling the economy by making people feel good. We should let the economy take care of itself. Entry level jobs are what they are. Many people start at entry level, such as students. It is a learning experience. Why does the government require these people to receive a minimum wage? The higher the minimum wage, the less incentive for an employer to offer that job. Employers will pay what is needed in the market. Capitalism works best when the government leaves it alone.

Yes, I think this is one of the only good things the Democrats have done since they became the majority in congress. The free market should decide most wages but at some point (and I think it should be done very rarely) the minimum wage has to be raised to keep up with the rising cost of necessities such as food, heat, and gasoline. At what point does a wage become so low that it is considered slave labor for someone making that much? Doesn't a minimum wage have to exist to prevent this? If one has to exist then doesn't it have to be raised at one time or another to keep up with increasing prices? Maybe the new law raises it too much and too quickly though.

Does that make sense or am I being irrational?

If you don't think its a good thing well then, maybe go to a 3rd world country and see how well no minimum wage works out.

When wages don't keep up with inflation then the poor get poorer. If profits can keep going up for the corporate elitists then the works wages should go up.

If you look at the years from Post WWII to the beginning of the Reagan years, You had a high rate of Union workers. Union works equal higher wages , Higher wages for the working class equals bigger middle class, bigger middle class equals a stronger America. Now we have depressed wages, yet the top 1% of us control over 20% of the wealth and that precentage keeps growing.

I have paid my workers minimum wage, and they can not survive. Why did I pay them the minimum because I could, and because there was people willing to take it because it was better than no wage. Now I pay twice the minimum wage because I could not sleep welling knowing what my workers are going threw. The next step is to provide health care for them.

Call me a crazy liberal business man that I want people lives to be better.

Just keep voting Republican and be fooled into thinking your helping yourself.

my buddy runs a retail warehouse.. and has a budget for his work force.... if the government raises taxes.. then he is forced to lay someone off and the rest take up the slack..

if they raise min wage.. he if forced to do the same thing

so the end results is 28 people would get a government forced raise of about 30 bucks a week and 1 or 2 is unemployed...

heres the truth of the mater.. raising the min wage doesn't do anything to help... the dems in power know this.. its a illusion of caring...what it really does is increase the unemployed which makes more people unhappy with life and angry with those that are successful.. aka.. class envy
which makes it easier to raise taxes.. which causes more to be unemployed...and more dependent on the government hand outs... and that's the real goal of democrats..''

Minimum wage is a starting point, it's a base. Prove you're worth more, you'll get more. that's the way the free market works.
Many employers pay their people bonuses, commissions and incentives. They pay min wage as a draw, employees view this as "pocket change" and amount they HAVE to be paid, but the real money is the end of month bonus check.

They should keep starting wages low and instead of raising the minimum wage, they should reward those employees who are hanging in there, keeping the faith and doing a good job.

your right. we shouldn't vote for people who do more damage than good. thats why we should vote republican. its nice having a 9 trillion debt to communist countries that are poisoning our children. its great to know that we can spend more than ever and still pay less taxes. how we gonna pay for this huge debt? who knows and who cares. lets let our poisoned children figure it out when they get old enough to be the deciders. i should say "if" they get old enough. it sure would be nice having health care for these poisoned kids, but we can worry about that later. if you are going to bash the current congress, you should compare them to the previous one. what did the republican congress from 2000-2006 do when they had a majority in both the house and the senate, and they had the executive branch. here i will help you out. they built bridges to nowhere, they cut taxes and drastically increased spending, the screwed up a major relief effort, they had inappropriate relationships with pages, and they lied about weapons of mass destruction. against all those i am glad you consider the new congress "do nothingers". there are lots of things i am happy they haven't done. now you tell me what you are happy the previous congress did. its a tough one think hard and get back to me.

oh yeah in case you havent noticed, they barely hold a majority. nowhere near enough to override a veto. wait until they have the presidency as well and see what gets done.

and with the whole minimum wage thing, they are just trying to decrease the gap between the lowest income and the highest in the company. CEO's and managent salaries have substantially increased over the years while the lowest of the salaries has stayed the same. if companies kept the playing field level congress wouldn't have to do it. free market is good and all, but there are somethings that people have to do collectively, either in the form of a union or by the legislative branch of government. sometimes businesses or people just prove themselves to be irresponsible.
