This is a great question, and it's funny how some people are reacting to it. If you actually watched NASCAR back when Earndhardt Sr. was racing, you'll know that there were a lot of people that were mad when he won it. Now that he's passed away, nobody is upset that he won seven championships.....but at the time MANY PEOPLE were mad for various reasons. Here are some.......
1. He wasn't their driver (even though many people CLAIM to have been a fan of his all along).
2. He was a very aggressive driver, and many people called him a dirty driver while he was still alive.
3. He was dominating the sport.
4. He was tying Petty's record.
People act like it's disrespectful of him to admit that you were upset when he won his 7th championship. It's not disrespectful, it's just the fact that not everybody was a fan of his while he was alive.

I was happy when he won his seventh championship. I'll never forget what he said when he got out of the car and some announcer said something like there was a new king. Dale said "There is only one king, Richard Petty and he will always be the king of Nascar".
Jeff Gordon did a similar thing when he tied Earnhardt for wins by flying the 3 flag. Too bad the fans don't have as much class as the drivers have.

I wasnt thrilled about it but not MAD--I am a Life long Richard Petty fan. A great Question!!!--Here is a twist Racenut I truely believe the Dale Sr. Fans are mad and Gordon Haters for these Reasons--Gordon won it in 1995-1997-1998 and his Team mate Terry Labonte won in 1996 and this Kept Dale Sr from his 8th Championship!!!!!

I've watched some of the old races and I think that if he was still racing that he would be black flagged a lot unless he changed his aggressive style. Maybe he won his 7th by being a bully? I know that's what the fans liked about him but it just wouldn't fly today. Jeff Gordon is driving under the new rules that make it more even ,so each race he wins is well earned.

OK race nut- It`s 5:00AM and I lived thru the night(thank GOD)
i`m up --- I wasn`t mad at all,, I think records were made to be broken especially by someone with Dale Earnhardt`s
talent,, whether ya liked him or not the guy had credentials.
you couldn`t take that away from him.he was the best
I`ve ever seen, 1990- I think, Derrik Cope won the Daytona
500-I thought it was handed to him--On the Drive home
I remember thinking heck it wasn`t given to him, he put
himself in position to win if something went wrong up front
and it did.. I like Jeff Gordon but that don`t mean I have to dislike everyone else.If Dale was still around alive and racing he would be my favorite, but he isn`t
Probably the best competition for Dale was Ernie Ervin
they looked like they were trying to kill each other every race
but after the race they would get a Sundrop soda pop
drink it and laugh--probably at the amount of money the
people would pay to watch.
A race driver is a special breed of people, whether you love em or hate em you gotta respect their talent

He didn't get the nickname "The Intimidator" for nothing. He earned his wins with a racing style most drivers would shy away from.
"If you ain't rubbin', you ain't racin."
I didn't care that much for him because I thought he was too aggressive, BUT, what he did for Michael Waltrip that day showed me a different side of him, he could have easily taken that race. He chose to stay back and block, and wound up in the wall. Tragic that not going for the win ultimately cost him his life, but I gained a lot of respect for him when he showed the "team" meant more than the "individual".
But as for his 7th cup win? Mad? nahhhh, he earned it.
As far as Jeff Gordon is concerned, he should already be considered one of the great racers. He should have a place with the others, for the same reason...he earned it.

I wasn't mad when Earnhardt won his 7th, I was elated. And, I would have no reason to be unhappy if Darth, I mean Jeff Gordon wins seven, because we would be watching history in the making.

Well, I've always thought Jeff Gordon sort of took the mantle as far as racing after Dale, Sr. died...He's the winningest active driver...Of course, in popularity, its hard to argue with Dale, Jr...

When he won it, I was upset. I'll admit it! I didn't like his style at all.
I'll also admit that his death and all the stories about the good things he did and how he helped the sport explode in terms of popularity changed my opninion.
It's like what Coach Bum Phillips said about Earl Campbell: "I don't know if he's in a class by himself, but the roll call's mighty short."

beth said it best. who would be upset? Dale was one of the best and stats don't make the man. If Jeff wins 11 cups that wouldn't make him the King. Or better than Dale. Ever.
