Classify Plants

2016-10-18 08:08:25 · answer #2 · answered by ? 4 · 0 0

Even animals classify plants into edible/inedible. Some animals distinguish plants from each other for other reasons, for example the birds that use specific herbs in their nests that reduce parasites. People also classify plants according to nutritional and medicinal characteristics, and classify flowers according to esthetic characteristics.

Biologists classify plants in order to understand evolutionary history. Agronomists classify different kinds of corn (for example) according to their yield, growing time, heat and drought tolerance, disease resistance, and other economically important differences.

Mostly, though, complicated and detailed classification schemes come from intellectual curiosity. That curiosity comes from a subjective, personal experience of enjoyment that doesn't really have or need a reason. Loosely speaking, people classify plants for the heck of it.

Classifying plants is useful because:
1. It shows relationships among different species.
2. We can know characteristics of a group, so that tells us characteristics of the species within that group.
3. It provides us with an organized way of studying those plants.
