The first year that My hubby and I lived in Dallas Texas we did a bar-b-q rib thanksgiving dinner. Complete with corn on the cob, steak fries, lemonade and mint chocolate chip pie for dessert. It totally rocked and all our friends thought it was great too!

You could have a non-traditional dinner that LOOKS like a traditional dinner: Vegan turkey slices or thin-cut pork chops (which could look like turkey slices with some gravy on them; instead of mashed potatoes, serve mashed cauliflower. If you're a green bean casserole fan, try it with thin asparagus spears instead. For dessert, how about a peanut butter mousse pie? It looks kinda like a pumpkin pie, but tastes totally different. It would be a funny twist on what people expect out of Thanksgiving dinner.

Have a Potluck dinner, but with a twist. . .Like a BBQ or Football food related and have a theme and have like a contest and gamble on the games on tv for usual thanksgiving items like a turkey, or a bag of potatoes, a gallon of milk, rolls etc etc. . .so it's worth WINNING!! Or give them little gifts like homemade cookies or any fun ideas you may have: like whistles, or party blowers, bubbles, candy, or party poppers etc. .. party stuff is a GREAT idea. Also have games to play like beanbags or football and plenty of alcohol and drinks on hand to have a RELAXED THanksgiving, instead of the STRESS from your family get together. I hope this helps. . .GOOD LUCK AND HAVE A GREAT THANKSNOTGIVING TO YOU! *KRISTIN*

Our family does a pot luck. Someone still cooks the turkey and stuffing, but then everyone else brings what ever they want to cook. Works out pretty nice. I'm asian, so we have a good mixture of food. Can't wait. That time of year to get fat again...lol!!!

The most non-traditional T-day I ever had was whole cabrito(kid goat) roasted over an open fire, with posole, tamales and pico de gallo. You probably don't want to get that elaborate.
I would say pick a type of food you really love-Mexican, Italian, Asian, whatever, and just make that your theme.

Have you ever tried a Cajun Broil? You can add sausage, potatoes, corn, crab, shrimp, etc. and you cook al; together then just pour it out on your table and everyone eats with their hands!
There is a restaurant that does it here and even our kids love it cuz they get to be messy. The tables are covered with butcher paper and afterward there are bowls of lemon water to freshen up!

Yes, when I was younger, mom cooked a chicken in the oven and we had regular trimmings and such with it. Another year she baked cornish hens and we had the usual stuff to go with it.
One year, we thought we were spending Tday over my father in laws and when we got there, no one was home. We were able to get a hold of them, and they went to someone else's house to eat...but told us there were turkey tv dinners in the freezer we could have, and that is what we had. That was the worst Tday meal I've had.
