can a camcorder capture "still pictures" or strickly videos?

i'm researching on this particular subject.

my miniDV camcorder has an auxilliary SD card memory for capture of still photos. The stills are download by usb port, the video by firewire. The camera is optimized for video use so the still photo features are minimal. for example it is hard to preset shutter speed or aperature.

depends on the video camera, but most nowdays will capture still photos as well...
