My neighbor/friend is a single mother of 3 doing her best and 2 of her kids are twin 8 year old boy and girl. They are average size for 8 year olds, I guess. Actually maybe a little more on the skinny side. Average height. Their birthday is a day before Christmas and with Christmas and School I would like to buy them some clothes. I dont want to ask their mom because she is the kind who says NO dont do that, you shouldnt have and so on. So I figured I would just try to do this myself. I am 25 and I dont have any kids so I have no idea how sizes run for kids. Thanks for your time!

Usually, in most of the popular chain stores like gap,old navy, limited too, gymboree etc- they have a size 8-10 which is a great fit for most average kids that age. My kids are on the very thin side but I always buy their average size because they fit better in length.
If you get pants or jeans they have "adjustable waist" type at all the stores I mentioned (also at Target) so if they are too big around the waist they can adjust them to fit and keep them another year or so since they can re-adjust as they get bigger.

usually an eight year old would wear an 8 but I would go for a 9 to be sure. Keep the receipt and exchange them if necessary. Buy the pants/bottoms with the adjustable waist so she can pull them in if they are too skinny for them. I have to do this with my kids as they are really skinny but average height so need the length in the bottoms.
You are lovely person to help out your neighbour. When she does the enevitable 'you shouldn't have' thing, say, 'well too bad I already did so you'll just have to take it or you'll hurt my feelings!!"

Yeah, usually the size syncs up with the age. I am 13 and wear a 14 slim in girls, as I am on the skinny side. I don't know about boys sizes but I bet they are that way too. Otherwise I'd go for a youth medium, i think.

my best friend was excatly like this when we were 8. i think she wore a size 8 or 10 slim in jeans. you could also get things with adjustable waists so they can adjust it(duh) in tops she wore a L 10-12 i think in Target`s size. at Ltd, Too you could get sizes one size bigger than their regular size cuz they run real small. (an eight year girl should get a 10 instead of 8)

in Australia the chids age is roughly there size. so 8 year old is size 8
