The quality and price of both of these cameras are fairly similar, so it ultimately comes down to yourself. I love my GL2, and although it's far from being a "perfect camera," it records motion, and has a fair bit of manual functions, so basically, it gets the job done. So does the XL1. As long as you have a good idea, seriously even if it doesn't have 24p which these cameras don't, it'll look good. Hope this helps!

if you are shooting films, you should opt for the newer HDV cameras. Both XL1 and GL2 are miniDV and good for general videography, ie weddings, TV news, TV commercials where 30 fps shooting is prefered. The XL1 is more suited to manual adjustment and studio shooting. The GL2 is better for sports and action.
