Serve!

2007-11-09 15:51:22 · answer #1 · answered by Anonymous · 9 2

I am an Australian, not American, and if I were young enough and if I thought a war was justified, I would serve and fight.

If I was drafted and I thought the war was wrong, I would either flee Australia or gladly serve time in prison. Even if I fled, I may even go to war as a war correspondent, as I was one during the Second Indochina (Vietnam) War.

The Nuremburg trials following WW-2 established the "Nuremburg Defence" where one can refuse to carry out an immoral order. Unfortunately, although the US was part of the Nuremburg trials, they do not allow for it amongst their own soldiers.

Serve

I would serve, but it wouldn't happen -- I've been retired from active duty for 10 years.

However, I wouldn't blame anyone who refused to be drafted. It was my ~choice~ to serve, and that's how it should be. I don't believe it is the right of the government to mandate that a nonvolunteer should die as a pawn of foreign policy.

I'd serve. I'm half tempted to now but I'm almost too old I think and feel like, I dont know, like, it's not something people my age do. Plus I think I'd be the out of shape old man that's holding everybody down, etc. But I'd serve if asked too, it'd be hard to live with myself being a big chicken. If I had to, I could request to be in a support role rather than infantry since I may not have the guts to kill anybody.

The last place I'd go is CANADA. But since I'm almost 61 and served for over 20 years, my chances of being drafted are pretty close to NIL. But, I WOULD go.

That's a queer question that hits home with our family. In the 70's when the government drew birthdates. I had one brother that was drawn as #1 and my other brother wasn't drawn at all but being scared he flew to Canada to escape from the Vietnam war and was killed in an automobile accident. Where my other brother that had to face the music came home and is still with us today. God works in strange ways huh.

If I were to be called up after my service in the Reserves was over, they'd better have a good reason for it. If not, I sure wouldn't mind living a new life in Canada.

Do we really need conscript armies anymore? Individual equipment and training is far more expensive now than it was thirty years ago. We can't afford to train and outfit millions more recruits, let alone those who don't want to be there.

Give me a 50bmg and I'll be the first to go. My husband has already served USMC 1985-1986 Med. Retired.
