Have tried detangler/ conditioner but they're not helping very much.

Try wetting it with a detangling spray, and using a wide tooth comb to remove the tangles. Start at the bottom, and hold the hair above the tangle, if possible (between the tangle and the scalp). This will help keep the tugging and discomfort to a minimum. If you start at the bottom of the tangle, and work through it a little at a time until you reach the top and eventually remove the tangle. If either of you is getting frustrated, be sure to take some breaks :) Best of luck!

Rub in a chunk of peanut butter or mayo (yes PB or mayo) and gently comb out. It takes a few spoonfuls but it works!!

try using your fingers and kinda pull outwards. hope it helps.
