Hi 'scyther_.'
If push came to shove you would miss a lot more than USA TV programmes:
A similar culture that’s is a western Judeo Christian English speaking , democratic and a close friend for decades to a non European communist state which treats its own population like dogs and has little in common with your own culture. In fact has some brewing open wound memories of the ‘Opium wars’ it which it was humiliated by the British.
Safe shipping lanes
Microsoft
Google.
The list goes on and on ...

Russia.
Seriously, the US and China would both lose. These nations are too big and the weapons too dangerous. It would be ugly and billions would die, even with conventional and non-nuclear weapons.
As to who would get the worst of it, the Chinese if its a short war, the Americans if its lasts into years. While they have the larger army, they do not have the technology to quickly get them overseas as the US does. The US would quickly gain air superiority and control the skies. Over time, however, the US would be in major trouble because of our diminished manufacturing base. The US could not do what it did in World War II today.
For allies, I think most nations would sit this one out if the US started the war - although a few of our enemies, Iran most notably, would openly side with the Chinese. If the Chinese did, then you would see most of the world against them.

The most likely scenario for a conventional war between the US and China would be over Taiwan. China has promised that if Taiwan declares itself independent, then it reserves the right to seize the island by force.
In journalist's Humphrey Hawkesley's faction novel Dragon Strike, the Chinese try to take back all sort of territories that they claim in South East Asia. The US, UK, Japan and Australia all send fleets and force the Chinese back. As others had said, the West's naval and air power would be too much for China. China only stands a chance in a straight land war and even then not having air superiority would make things very tough for them.
Still in a real war there's too much at stake for an all out war over a regional dispute so all sides would want it to end quickly without losing too much face.
An India/ China war is also a possibility if India was to turn on Pakistan. Hawkesley also covered this scenario.in Dragonfire.

The answer to that would depend on where the war was fought as an invasion of either country would be impossible, both would defend their own homeland. In the Korean war when China intervened to help North Korea the Americans were flattened by a third world army. The reason I say third world is Chinese troops only had rifles and mortars and no transport. The Americans for all their technology cannot fight on the battlefield. History will prove that statement!

It would depend on where it's fought. If home countries, the invaders would always have the harder time for logistical reasons. Same if it was at a country on edge of China, like Korea... USA at big disadvatange (as it not fully fair), but could still punch it's weight.
If it was in a neutral country, half way in-between China and the States, then USA would vastly have the advantage. China doesn't even have any Blue Water capability (thankfully - I mean... who wants Chinese Aircraft carriers and destroyers full of the Red Army patrolling around international waters - scary).

right now if there was a war china would have a very real edge the reason is
1. usa is involved in 2 hot wars afganistan, iraq. but is involved in numerous other active wars/peacekeeping
2. this means that there resources are quite stretched
3. usa is not very popular right now. this could mean other country heasitating to support usa or anti us countrys supporting china.
4. the amount of terrain us would have to cover is ermmmm large lol
5. usa has a better army no doubt about it but if u think about it china does not excatly showoff about there army capabilities plus we donot have any kinda conflict to judge there army by.
6. and if it actually came down to it and looked like china was gonna lose maybe they would be mad/desprate enough to use those lovely nukes and then well we would be f***ed

I think you would be watching Germany against Russia replayed except with an ocean replacing the Polish Corridor.
Russia would likely support USA at first, just like the USA supported Hitler in the 30s. But if it looked like USA was going to be a threat in Manchuria to Russian interests then you would see huge support for China from Russia.
India's support is the real question.
As far as missiles and nuclear war. I think everybody oh the planet would launch automatically.

Well the first question you have to answer.
Is where this conventional war occured.
Since China has no means to move it's Army to America, or even very far outside of China.
That rather limits your choices.
Right now, America does not have the ability to defeat China in China in a convential war.
IE: We could not invade them and occupy China.
We just don't have enough troops or amphibious capability.
But America does have the conventional capability to seriously hurt China,
We could shut their ports down, close all their air ports and bomb pretty much anywhere in China we wanted to.
China does not have the ability to do that to America.
They just don't have a blue water navy and they do not have any aircraft that could reach America from China.

the USA would kick china's ***. OK maybe china has a military force of 2,250,000 active personnel, more than the USA's armed forces active personnel of 1,426,713 but they only have such a large force because of conscription. However the defense budget of the USA is $548.9 billion to China's $44.94 billion. so therefore the USA has more than 10 times as much money as China to spend on guns, battleships, bombs, ICBMs, fighter jets, bombers, military helicopters and the development of all these weapons so i do not really think that china would stand a chance.

China would win, more man power and determination. I doubt anyone else would get involved since no one wants to go against America but most of the world isn't exactly happy with the country and the world would probably be better without the wasteful, country bombing tyrants so it might be like "Yeah we'll join you!" and then turn our backs and run when the Chinese advance, leaving the Americans to get slaughtered...I'd miss some of the tv though.

Given that they already have the largest and probably the most advanced airforce in the world, I would say a lot would be determined by which side had the support of India.
As far as winners, I think that war only has losers.
