From my own experience, all I can tell you is..you do need help, it is out there and if you can not get it from your parents right now, then go to another adult,(family member or friends parent, teacher, or your doctor) There are also 800 numbers you can call for help. If you can not get your parents to grasp the fact that you need help, then start with one of the other I have listed and I promise your parents will come to realize your pain.

I went though something like this when I was 15, and it was very difficult because minors need parental approval to get treatment. Anyway, there are resources that you can use without your parents knowing, such as free hotlines where you can talk with a counselor. You can also try talking with your school counselor. (For minors, the policy usually is you can see them up to three times without parental consent.)

There could be various reasons as to why your parents don't want to accept the fact. Do they have a good understanding about depression and that it is a valid medical condition? Or are they in denial because they don't want to accept that their daughter has a mental illness?

If your parents don't believe you because they don't have a good understanding of depression, depending on how open they are, and how they feel towards psychology in general, you can try finding resources (that they believe are creditable) with more information on depression. If they don't want to believe that you have it, you can even go through the symptoms and talk about which ones you are experiencing (even though that might be awkward), or use an inventory and show them your score.

That's what it took for my parents to believe me (along with my poor grades and moodiness) and let me get treatment, although it was three years after the counselor first told them about it. No one should have to wait that long.

Hope everything works out.

Okay, I don't know how old you are but I am going to assume that you are a teenager. I was a very depressed teenager but thankfully had parents that were able to understand that (although I didn't realize it until years later). My point is if you feel that you are depressed to the point that you can no longer function normally and your mind is always preoccupied than you need to seek professional help. Whether it is through your school counselor or from friends that you can talk to there are always options available. Just please don't allow it to get to the point that you feel totally hopeless and are unable to cope. I work in EMS and within the past year had to respond to a 16 year old that took her own life...there has not been a day that has gone by that it has not haunted me. There is nothing bad enough that can amount to the pain that inflicts on people regardless if they are family or not...

Even though i used to cut myself when i was a teen (30 years ago), i think that today, it's become a fad.

Cutting and self-injury are normally the result of unresolved distress which occurred earlier in our lives... do you have any issues which you are avoiding? Or you did not face or deal with? Such as some sort of trauma or abuse?

If you believe you are depressed, consider talking with the school counselor. Let him or her know you've tried to communicate your feelings to your parents, but they aren't apt to listen. Perhaps the counselor might have some good suggestions, or even call your parents in for a meeting, if she thinks you need further assistance with your problems.

I hope you get good help and answers here... take care ok?

Below is a source i found when i did a Yahoo search for TEEN SELF-INJURY SELF-HELP -- there are a lot more resources. Just do your own search

Most of the time, self injury is not for attention. Just would like to put that out there. Self abuse is not the answer. It really just makes things worse. You don't want to make it a habit; it is really hard to break.
If your parents won't believe you, you have to take it upon yourself to get help. Talk to someone you trust first, or if you are really desperate/close to suicide call a hot-line or talk to a counselor at school.
Things will get better, you just have to wait for it.
Good luck, hun.

You are not alone girl! I am going through the exact same thing. I would just sit them down and honestly tell them how you feel. If they don't believe you, tell another close family member or friend. Maybe ask them to tell your parents. Your parents may just be in denial. Meaning, they are just simply refusing the fact that you are depressed. But, if you EVER need anyone to talk to just e-mail me.

you need to see a counselor at school or call your doctor. Some parents dont want to believe that their child has problems, but depression is real. You're reaching out for help. See if there's a free clinic that will help you, but contact a teacher that you trust first for some help too (confidentially)

After dinner have a talked to both of them. Tell them that you are very serious about the fact you are depress. Tell them if they don't take it seriously it can lead to more problems. This will get there attention. I think this is more than depression you have. Talk to them ASAP. If they don't believe you will have to talk to family and friends to seek help.
