I just recieved a lovely lidded tall glass 'jar' as a gift (from pottry barn) it is approx 16 inches tall and quite elegant but it's boring empty, any ideas as to what to put in it (I'm over sea shells) and a candle would'nt be appropriate as it has a lid

Flat transparent glass stones are nice. They come in a wide variety of color. Then place a nice 8 inch tall chunky candle in the center. I would choose some nice fall colors right now.
Another nice look is if you have red dog wood. The stems look very nice bunched for a fall arrangement. They could be set in with the glass stones in place of a candle.
You could also fill the container with small gourds for fall. I would only fill it one third to one half full.
Change out the stones with small Christmas glass ornaments after Thanksgiving.
Another idea would be to add bottled water to the glass stones, a Beta, and a floating plant.
You could fill it with mixed nuts (in shell) to enjoy for snacks and a decoration.

You could build a little terrarium.
In the plant section of a store or in a plant store, you need about an inch of charcoal on the bottom and some soil. I like to plant fittonia or ferns in terrariums. You can put something natural that you like if you are beyond seashells. Look for a terrarium book at your local library. You spray it some and put the lid on. Don't want it too wet, it will create its own moisture.

being its fall.. go outside and pick some of the prettiest leafs you can find.. gently put them in the jar. Let them seem as if they have just fallen into the jar. You can also go to Walmart and for a dollor buy a fake limb of leafs, cut them off the stem and stick them in there, or stick the entire stem in and use it as a vase (possibly set the jar lid slightly propped up on the side of the jar and table).

Get some colored glass beads and a battery-operated light string (they have them in stores now for Christmas decorating), put in the lights and pour the beads in around them. You just open the lid whn you want to turn the lights on and off. anything colorful, or even a single color, would look great

You could always buy some of those irridescent pebbles and decorate them with nude colors, or whatever colors match the rest of the decor in your apartment.

OR, you could dry out some of your favorte flowers and fill them with the dried petals (I prefer rose petals of different colors, but the choice is entirely up to you)

I have some ideas:
1. You can use it to store your bars of soap, plus it will look nice on your bathroom counter.
2. Pine cones.
3. Dried orange slices. Easy to make. http://2oldcrows.blogspot.com/2006/10/how-to-make-your-own-dried-orange.html
4. Various buttons.
5. If you are into knitting, you can use it to store your yarns.
6. How about used wine corks?

i would go to a dollar store and buy several bags of glass spheres/stones, and just fill it up with those..then set it where the light can be filtered through. say like shades of blues, green and clear glass stones...would look lovely in a windowsill.or whatever colors you prefer...

Put some flowers in, with a little greenery. Also a piece of lace and some tree bark.

how about layers of different colors of sand, then tie some raffia around it?
For Christmas you could fill it with bulbs.
