I was 17 when I joined the Marines. I thought I had nothing to live for also. 30 years and 5 great kids later, I am grateful for every moment.

I'm not sure about the Marines but any kind of military service might be able to solve your problems. I know how hard it is to be 17, in a life that is WAY less then perfect, and really have nothing to lose. I did join the Army at 17...got my University for free and I'm now a teacher in China. I wanted to do something more then what life was giving me...but I had no way to get it. My family couldn't send me to university, I couldn't find a real job other than flippng burgers and I didn't want to have to stay in such a small town for the rest of my life. I went into PATRIOT Missiles because I wanted to go into combat (I kind of had a death wish at the time)...and since that was the closest I could get to it being a woman I went for it. I had the best time of my life and will never regret it. It got me on track and I have had to never look back at my old life.

But you don't have to go combat...there are a lot of safer jobs out there. And I would stay away from the Marines...they are not the sanest bunch of people out there. Also if you do decide to go into the military...don't quit, you'll regret it. It may not be perfect and it may be hard at times but once you've finsihed your time you will thank yourself for seeing it through. It will give you a direction and focus not only in your life but also self respect and pride. And plus there is a lot of time to party and have fun with your new "family"...because in the end that's what they are.

If you have nothing to live for I don't the military is the place for you. No one wants a guy that doesn't care, he will get others killed. Go in the military because you belive in what they are doing, you want to learn a trade, and you're up for a lot of hard physical labor. If you want to be successful you had better be prepared to study hard, also... I have two grandsons in the Marines now. It is one of the more difficult to be accepted to at this time. The Army will take almost anyone but I do think you still must have a diploma or a GED. Remember the sign-up is a six year commintment at this time. Can you see yourself doing this at least until your 23?

You shouldn't do anything based on the reason you have nothing to live for. You should something that makes you want to live. If joining the Marines will make you enjoy life, you should do it. I think it possibly would, build friendships, achieve things, make you feel like a whole person, I guess. Sometimes it takes change for people to find something they have been needing. Maybe you'll do ok in college or working at a restaraunt. There's lots of paths in life. Just don't choose the path out of desperation or fear. Have some optimism.

No, you should seek professional counseling. The Marines, and for that matter, all branches of the military do not want people with nothing to live for. Those are the type of people that not only get themselves killed, but get others killed as well. 17 years of age is too young to decide you have nothing to live for and you should get help to find out why you feel this way.

At 17 you have things to live for that you are just not aware of yet!!!! You should only join the military if it is something that you really WANT to do, not for an escape. What happens if you're more miserbale in the Marines than you were before? You can't just quit. But if it's something that you've always wanted to do then they could do wonderful things for your life. Please DON'T GIVE UP AT 17!!!!! Things will get better!!!! Good luck, I'll be praying for you!!!!

Well, Shaun, you actually have the best part of your life ahead of you. You can do whatever you want to when you turn 18. If you are having trouble with school, look into the external high school diploma program or see about moving over to the tech part of your high school and study a trade like electrician, plumbing or HVAC or check with your community college and see what kind of trades they are offering and ask if they know if anybody is looking for an apprentice. Be grateful for what you do have. Trials and tribulations make up stronger people. So learn from whatever you are going through and make the best of every day and even in crappy situations make the best of it. If you are having trouble at home, ask them what you can do to make it better. Pitch in and help out, be respectful. work really, really hard at your education. God bless and pray for strength and guidance.

you are 17, you have plenty to live for. if you think running away will be better instead of dealing with what is going on. than i say go for more bs in your life in join the marines. but remember....life is for living and growing, if you run from things now how will you handle more complicated issues? are you being abused(sexually or mentally)? if you are, there are places for you to go to. talk to someone you trust and make up your own mind about what is right for you.

I was in the same boat as you were. I didn't have any idea what I was going to do after I graduated from high school. My parents and I didn't have any money for college and my grades in high school were mediocre. So I joined the Marines and it was a great experience. It gave me confidence and showed me that I can do a lot of things I didn't think I could do. It re-motivated me and made me believe in myself. It exposed me to many places and peoples. So after I got out I decided to go back to college because I wasn't afraid of the World anymore and the Marine Corps taught me that I can do a lot of things that I didn't think I could do if I just worked hard and believed in myself.
