The wearing of a red Poppy originated with 3 people, Major John McCrae a Medical Officer with the 1st.Canadian Contingent at the battle of the Ypres salient in May 1915. Miss Moira Michael, Secretary of the American YMCA and Madam Guerin, Secretary French YMCA. So it's not a British idea but has been a very succesful fundraiser for the Royal British Legion.

The poppies come from a poem written during World War One, about how the shattered no-mans land between the lines had cause the poppies to bloom irregularly amidst all the death and devastation cause by the first industrialized war.
It symbolizes hope for life, despite wars destruction.

Yes, like Frank M noted, the VFW will set up in front of a grocery store or other business & give you a poppy to wear in exchange for a donation. (here in the Pacific NW anyway).

However, from what I've observed, I certainly haven't noticed a majority of people participating.

Yes, but it is rarer now. I remember getting poppies to wear from the local American Legion when I was in grade school, but that was a long time ago.

Yes.

And you will find many Veterans selling them on November 11th to fund the Old Soldiers home and other worthy agencies.

No that is something that the Brits and Canadians do on Veterans Day. Americans just have parades and in some-places have flags placed on the graves of Veterans in Veterans Cemeteries.

Most Americans don't even know the significances of Nov. 11. I don't think Americans really care about Veteran's day as a whole.

Nope,

And its funny, earlier this year,

The Democratic party in America, had a section saluting American veterans.

And they put a picture of Canadian soldiers wearing poppies on thier official DNC webpage, instead of a picture of American Soldiers.
