I read somewhere that is is the foam backing that is decomposing thru time...no one can clean it and even if they can,it is expensive to open and clean it..but since it is a goner,no harm trying out ...

Camera repair is NOT a "do it yourself" project.

I suggest you contact garryscamera.com and ask if he repairs Canon cameras. Garry has serviced 8 of my Minolta 35mm film cameras this year (clean, lubricate, adjust, replaced light seals) and I've been very happy with his work. He gives a 90 day warranty and his costs are very reasonable - I paid $45.00 + $8.00 shipping for each camera.

EDIT: Garry is in Illinois, USA.

You shouldnt try messing with the shutter yourself. Send it to Canon for repair and cleaning before you do any real damage doing it yourself.
