a laser diode emits from along the edge of the pn junction
an led emits from the whole face of the anode
because the laser has to emit from an area that is only as thick as the pn junction the power density power / sq area is much higher and that causes a much lower life

Hi. The intensity of a laser diode concentrated in a single frequency is more stressful to the device than the bulb which has a lower power and a less concentrated frequency range.
