The person I'm writing about has very little family left. He seems to get a little bit more "down" every year as the holidays approach.

Maybe because holidays are usually about being with the family and many people are visiting family and he's all alone. Also, the more material a holiday becomes, the less cheer spreads. Here's a tip. Be his family. If he's your friend, show him your there. Let him spend the holidays at your house.

It could be that he is lonely since he as very little family left, and the feelings of loneliness seem to stand out more during the holidays because he knows that during those times there are other people getting together with their families, but he doesn't have that anymore.

I don't know how he thinks because I'm not him, but if I had very little family left, I would feel depressed knowing that there are many people putting in effort to decorate and prepare for all sorts of festivities with their family, but here I am alone with nothing to look forward to. There would be no point in getting into the holiday spirit because there are no loved ones to enjoy it with. I would feel more depressed knowing that I'm alone while everyone else is with their family.

Mood changes, especially during the winter months, could also be due to the shorter daylight hours and longer nights.

When you don't have the people you used to have and you remember what happened at the holidays, it can really get you down. Also, there seems to be this expectation that you should be happy at the holidays. If you don't feel that way, it also makes you feel blue. If people have died, gone away, etc, then this can be a very blue period especially if it had been a good time when these people were there.

I guess its just the feeling of not being able to spend time with his loved ones that have passed on. If he doesn't have anyone to spend the holidays with, maybe you can invite him to your family gathering for the holidays so he doesn't feel so alone or left out.

I don't celebrate x-mas because of the problems I had with
my family. It is not a happy time for me, and many others
don't want to deal with this day. So many people are gathered with their loved ones and every one in the x-mas
spirit. It's hard to enjoy a day that reminds people of the past
memories that are painful. It's better to just let your friend
be.

Holidays tend to bring out the nostalgia in people. Reflecting on the past -- regardless of whether it was filled with happy or sad memories -- is enough to make anyone to feel a little wistful.

You cant bring family back but just encourage him to do things, such as... help at a giving center or talk to strangers to help them feel good. When your down about stuff like this, try to see the positive side and celebrate the living instead of dwelling on sad pasts.
