Tobacco was a major source of income when this country was first being colonized by the Europeans. At that time people did not realize the damage it was doing to their bodies. After many people were addicted to it, the tobacco companies (who had begun to realize the problems) lied about what they knew. Since it is now recognized as one of the most addictive drugs, there are many who cannot quit. The only way it will disappear is when young people stop trying and getting addicted. If there is no income cigarette makers will change to other products (maybe). After we old addicts die off.

Smoking is gradually being banned. Where I live nearly all public places--restaurants, government buildings, individual businesses, airport, airplanes, etc.--- have banned smoking. It's even illegal to smoke in some parks. The tobacco companies are being sued by cancer sufferers. Give it time, smoking just may be totally illegal someday here in the USA.

The number one contributing factor for most cancers is alcohol, NOT smoking. And it's legal too! Ready to give up your beer?

if you are going to outlaw anything that could cause cancer then you can't stop at cigarettes..what about the sun, a lot of the processed foods we eat, natural radiation (radon gas) released by the earth, and other things we do and are around on a daily basis could cause cancer
below is a good article on what can cause cancer..remember there are over 200 types of cancer, that is a lot of stuff to regulate

Smoking can cause cancer, true.... but so can alcohol, pollution, additives in foods, etc.... You can die from other legal things too......If we were to ban everything that can hurt or kill, then we wouldn't be able to drive, talk on the phone, walk in the rain, listen to loud music, cook our food..... rant rant rant......lol

Politicians do not care what is good or bad for you. They make money on it; that is what they care about.
