There was mustard (maybe expired) and ketchup in this bowl I ate. The bowl was left in the sink for about 1 week+. When I saw the bowl, where mustard or ketchup should have been was replaced with a big long strand of clear, see-through, jello-ish, and gummy-ish substance. Within it was thousands of tiny black dots so many that when this thing was looked from afar, it appeared to look like a big long flabby strand of burnt mark on the bowl. After trying to peel it off with running water and scraping bowl with detergent, the bowl still had a yellowish tint.

Is it still safe for use?

This actually happened in two bowls which only had mustard/ketchup in it.

Here's a picture of it. May help in identifying. Because of camera quality, its actually all tiny black dots. Also, thanks for the answers.

Ummmmm..... if you use bleach when you wash your dishes it should be ok, also.... if you wash them or at least rinse them right away... its better too!

If the bowl was a glass bowl then i would say add some bleach and yes it would be safe. If the bowl was plastic well then that is a different story because the plastic would hold onto any little bacteria if left for a long enough period. And a week is a long period of time, just throw it out

unless the bowl is a family collection item that will be on Antique Road Show one day or you paid $50 for it then toss it and buy two more at Walmart. If you're a Walmart protester than pay a few more dollars at L&T or whereever u shop. Sure you could easily use bleach but if you're not on a budget buy some more. Is it really worth taking the chance with ur health.

It's probably a bacterial or fungal growth, similar to what happens in sugared iced tea if mishandled.

Judge for yourself whether you can clean it, but it'll take more than running it under water. Actually scrub it with soap and a brush or mild scrub-sponge:

Don't use the heavy scrub sponges like these

as they're quick to scratch even ceramics (they're for bare-metal pots and pans.) Bleach wouldn't hurt either, just be careful, it stains (colored clothing especially).

In the future don't leave standing water in dishes for days on end. If you have to leave them overnight, dump the water out, then just re-soak them when you're ready to wash.

If the bowls were scrubbed and the tint was still there I would rinse them in some bleach water to kill anything that might still be there and then wash them again and you will be good to go!!!

Wash the heck out of it. Twice. All of my tupperware is stained red from marinara sauce. I think it's just a stain.
