Because they have a tariff on goods that are imported. You could use the US Postal website and print and pay your own postage online and get a small discount. On the form you have to fill out check the box marked as a gift and there will be no tariff on that. If that is too complex for you tell them at the post office to mark the package as a gift. If you decide to do this online be sure and go to the post office first and get some free supplies such as international proirity mail boxes and form #2976E which is a clear envelope to put your address label and customs forms in. Also you can order these supplies on line from the USPS and they will send them to you in the mail for free. Be sure to read on the website the instructions for mailing international parcels. It may look hard to do this but really it is very easy after you have done one. Good luck to you!

First when you are shipping something from USA you pay the US rates, not the Italian, as you pay the Italian rates if you ship from there.

Second I sent today 4.7 pounds by airmail to Italy from a US Post office and it costed 36 $

Third some of the previous answers prove that the idiots mother is always pregnant, for exemple the one about buying guns, only and idiot could give an answer like that.

Fourth I suggest you to chek here

Yes & no. I am disturbed with how often the price goes up on US postage, but if you think of how far that letter goes & how many hands it passes by & how much gas they are using to send your letter, then I guess .41 is not much. The FOREVER stamp is being sold now & you can use it forever... meaning, buy all you want now, never to have to increase postage on that envelope that you use it on. They are .41, also.
