Aww, is she sick?
When I first adopted my little kitty he came home a little sick and was sleeping and hanging out in the litter tray. I took him to the vet, gave him medicine and when he was feeling better (and less nervous about his new home) he was not sleeping in his poop. :)
Def. get her checked out. Anyone sleeping around their own feces is not good!

If you've ruled out illness, my guess would be that she doesn't want to venture very far because she is still getting used to her new home.
It is advised that an owner provide one more litter box than number of cats, so if you have one cat, supply two litter boxes, two cats: three litter boxes, etc. Another theory is, she may have lived in a small cage and either her bed was a litter tray with a blanket or that was the only place for her to sleep (how sad). Get her a soft, fabric bed and keep it about five feet way from her litter boxes. When ever she sleeps in the litter box, gently place her in her bed, you may even want to put a warm water bottle in it for awhile, then every couple of days move the bed further away from the litter until you get it to where you want her bed to be permanent. You may also want to put something with your smell in the bed.
At this time, you should be spending hours and hours bonding with her, holding her, brushing her, talking to her, playing with her. Before long, you'll be the best of buds and she may even decide she wants to share your bed with you.
Good luck with her and enjoy her. Cats are the best pets and can be a great source of joy, love and comfort.

Cats are funny things, I foster kittens and they will take food to eat in the tray...ewww, Give her time shes prolly hunt out a new place, its prolly cus she knows its her space,, her smell, you know, You could put another tray down, she will then sleep in one and use the other, or you could put a box where the tray is now and move the litter tray to next to the box, put her in the box, even sprinkle litter in ther to encourage her in there, but be forgiving if she does use it...I dont think its a real propblem, nothing that time wont sort out! give her loads of love and treats to, so she knows shes welcome in your home, she will soon find a new spot ...like the end of your bed or the middle stair...lol GOOD LUCK AND ENJOY HER!!!! x

There's a few reasons, one the kitten could be sick, another the litter is cooler feeling so she might be hot, and another possibility - a lot of shelter cats actually do this (I've seen them do this at pet stores too) they're kept in small cages with just food/water dishes a litter box and they curl up and go to sleep. Just keep taking her out of the litter box and put her on her bed.

Is she young? Sometimes kittens will sleep in the litter box because they don't know any better, and they sometimes just fall asleep.
If its an older cat it may feel uncomfortable in a new setting. Try to find a place for the cat that is covered (probally like the litter box) where it can go and feel safe.

Does she also use the litter box to go potty? If so this could be a health hazard. If not you may need to train her to use the litter box the correct way and get her another comfy bed for her to sleep on.
The easiest way to train her would be to put some of her urine or feces in the litter box and show her. Then when she uses the box correctly give her a treat.

I agree with the other answer, it's fine, your cat's just "special"... XD It's a well known fact that cats will sit/sleep anywhere. I sometimes stare at my cats as I see them observe the surroundings to choose where to settle down... Comfy bed? Nice warm lap? Big fluffy pillow? Nah, I think I'll rest in that wet sink in the bathroom, and then later I shall migrate to the box of shoes in the corner of the living room. Whatever, so long as the litterbox is clean and he's happy there, all is well in cat world!

I have owned 11 cats in my life, and while they've done weird things, they've never done this. I wouldn't think it would be healthy to sleep in excretions. She's probably nervous coming from a home and may have been mistreated in the past and somehow feels comfortable there. Hold her a lot, love her a lot, I think she'll come around in a little time.

I would suggest getting her a kitten bed. Mine did that because it was the most comfortable thing for him to sleep on. Once i get him the kitten bed, he stopped sleeping in the litter.

maybe she likes the comfort?
but the best way to stop something like that is to give her a bed in your room (long enough to stretch in cats like to stretch)
and put her in it if she starts to sleep in her cat litter do that for like a week and I'm sure its fine for her health
