The letter should explain how they came up with the amount that they claim that he owes. Call the IRS and ask if it does not.
On the chance that this is some sort of scam, do NOT call the number on the letter. Call 1-800-829-1040 and tell them about the letter and ask what it's all about. Or call your local IRS office; here's a link to a clickable map on the IRS' website that will take you to a local number: http://www.irs.gov/localcontacts/index.html
Most inmates don't earn enough to have to file a return on their own while incarcerated. However if you filed a joint return with him while he was incarcerated, any money that he did earn should have been included on your joint return. And in that case the letter would have been addressed to both of you since you'd both be liable, not just him.

Call the IRS i just did a search on the web site for a form 2050 and did not find one.
But go to IRS web site and get the number.
Sounds like a scam or someone stole his name one.
But please if you find out that you do owe make sure you owe and it is not the mistake of the IRS.
Also do not go to a company that claims it can settle for pennies on the $.Because that is a huge scam!We tried them and they just got us into more trouble with the IRS.

Do not ignore this. If the amount was large (they don't make that much in prison), his identity may have been stolen and used by someone else to work contract labor. Visit the local IRS center and ask them to print out the information on the income (they have to give it to you). If the name does not match, you need to start a fraud claim. Good luck!

IRS provides a phone number on all their letters. Have your husband call the phone number provided, you can't call for him, the person the letter is addressed to must call on their own. IRS can not release any information to anyone other than to the person the letter is addressed to per their disclosure guidelines.
