Why do some cats kill mice and birds?

In the wild, cats have to hunt their own food. They are not given cat food in a bowl everyday. When cats kill mice and birds they are just hunting and using their instincts like they would in the wild.

Cats are natural hunters. They hunt mice in the wild, where mice are plentiful. They also like the taste of mice, because they are carnivorous. Most cats hunt in attics for their owners with rodent problems, and live on mice their whole lives. Mice are also small and an easy catch for the skillful stalkers.

It depends on the cat. Some cats like to hunt mice while others go after birds, lizards, and flying insects. Still there are others that couldn't care less about catching anything at all.

Cats evolved to be the way they are in response to the available food in the area in which they evolved. Cats evolved to hunt small prey, which means rodents and birds.

And to those who say domesticated cats don't eat birds and mice... uh, they do. Sometimes they just kill them because of instinct (or fun, if you want to view your kitty as a sadist) but sometimes they eat them, too. Finding a little mouse liver in my sweatpants one Christmas while home visiting the parents is all the proof I need. But in case you need more, there's the feathers, the only half eaten rodent corpses...

They don't. They love to chase mice, or any small, quick moving thing. It's their survival instinct, taught them by their mothers. They will often catch a mouse and let it go again, just for the fun of catching it again. They much prefer nice tinned cat food offered by us, their willing slaves!

Because cats are hunters and carnivores.

Mice (and birds) are the perfect targets for a cat. If you are feeding your cat, it will not eat it's prey.
