Drooling can be a common thing in some cats but if your kitty hasn't done this before then it's something that needs to be checked out by a vet. Drooling can be caused by nausea, licking or ingesting a toxic or irritating substance, dental problems, or oral injuries. Since he's still eating and acting normal you should make an appointment to get him seen as soon as you can. If he stops eating, starts vomiting, acts lethargic or anything else that's not normal for him then I would take him in right away. Also if there's a chance he could have gotten into something toxic then getting him seen sooner rather than later can save you both money and anguish.

There are a number of things that could cause accessive drooling. The most common are a tooth absess or other tooth problem, or an allergic reaction to either a toxin or something else.
If you have a flea collar on him, remove it. This could be causing the problem. Have you sprayed any bug spray or other chemicals around the house lately?
If it continues take him to the vet, better to be safe than sorry.
Although some cats are just droolers! (Mine drools sometimes like that for no reason, but she also drools when she comes in contact with something she is allergic to.)

My cat started drooling like this, and it turned out to be a very infected tooth, needing veterinary dental work. It wasn't that expensive to fix, he was on antibiotics for a bit, and he came out fine. Your cat needs to be checked out...dental infections can spread to the rest of the cat's body, including the heart and brain and become life threatening.

He could be sick. Maybe some kinda cat flu.
It would be best to take him to a vet. If this is an early sign of something worse, you would be saving your cat instead of waiting for a more terminal case.

Could he have tasted anything that would taste bad or bitter? This can make them drool. If not, though, I would take him to the vet if he keeps it up, as it could be any of the answers above, or another problem.

It could be any of the things mantioned in the other answers, also my cat drools when she gets affectionate. She will paw and drool when she feels very loving.

lol! mine does it when he is really excited, or purring. cats secrete liquid from their mouths to mark territory (hence nuzzling), and when they get excited they excrete more.
