A) Get another person to look at it right now in case you have a tick bite. Do not pull out or scrape out a tick. Ticks can cause Lyme disease which is seldom recognized, and has spread across the US, and can ruin your life. But it sound bigger than a tick bite anyway.
B) If it looks clean and safe to your friend,
it may be safe.
C) Definitely see a doctor if it looks funky in any way. If not funky or any sign of bite or puncture, measure it. If it grows in a week, see a doctor. Don't squeeze it or play with it a lot.
D) I am not a doctor, but that is how I would do it. If I had good health care or a better income, I would go straight to a doctor since that is a pretty big lump if you mean peanut in a shell, if just peanut size maybe a bite. It is a sign of something weird so go to a doctor soon, unless it really gets better fast.

Can you kind of roll it around under the skin? Does the skin look normal? How long has it been there?
Maybe a gland (usually tender), also a common place for a cyst. Cysts on the neck can be harmless, last a long long time, and grow to ugliness. Swollen glands will generally swell from a recent or about to be noticed illness. They can last a few days to 6 months. They are a good indicator of hidden illness sometimes, but are generally doing good for you. Cysts may grow and grow and might actually be something more serious, like cancer or a cancerous threat. (No, don't even think it yet.....)
Maybe a pimple (though that's usually tender too).

The size of a peanut is neither small nor tiny, so you should go to a doctor and get it checked.
We cannot tell from here without seeing it in person.

I had the same thing left it for years . it was a cyst
when i did get it removed it only took about 20 minutes day surgery and 2 stitches nothing to it
I should have had it removed long before i did
as when i combed my hair the comb would catch on it so don't worry about it ask the doc to remove it
a very fast and simple procedure

I had something like that develop in the back of my head when I was in college many years ago. The university nurse said it was a lymph node. A few days later it went away. Go see your doctor in case its something serious.

I wouldn't trust these answers with my life and health, although there may be some good answers. I suggest that you make an appointment to see your primary care doctor.

Sounds like a subaceous cyst in your scalp. Is it mobile or fixed to bone?
It's easily removed under local, see your Dr.

Maybe it's a clogged hair follicle that's developed into a boil.
