I think it is a politically correct thing to say that we appreciate them. But the way they are treated when they return home, I would have to say they are very under appreciated.

Optimists and patriots will say yes, and I'm sure there are many, many Americans who appreciate veterans, but facts will say otherwise. A recent study has reported that 1 in 4 homeless persons are veterans. The President, persistently hawkish in calling for military action against America's perceived enemies, continues to slash the budget for veterans' health care.
Draw your own conclusions.

I want to say yes; however after reading that 1/4 of the homeless in America on any given night are vets: I just can not say that.
It is sad, but the powers that be could give a flying leap about someone after they are no longer killing for the sake of profits.
That being said; the average American greatly appreciates the dedication and sacrifice that those that have served have given to what they believed was right. I surely do.
So I guess it depends on who you consider America--the bankers and corporations, or the Citizens that lost loved ones for the profit of the former.

Being a Veteran of Vietnam and other lil fire fights that NEVER made the Front Page....NO! It is a sad plight that the Government laid on our heads and hands back during the 'Nam. Jump forward 25 years plus.....at least the people are backin' the soldiers and Marines on this one! Only....the Veteran is sh*t upon once back and no longer of use to our country! THIS IS A NATIONAL SHAME!!! Leave the politics out of this......America should be aware that this is unacceptable!!!

Well im going to say yes! Im the Vice-President for the AUSA (Association of The United States Army) in California. Oh yes we do appreciate the people who give so readily. I just returned from the National Meeting in Washington D.C. and we are giving our lives here in America to get money for the families, help the men and women who have been overseas to start over. We, all of us, are people who do this for nothing. Meaning we are all volunteers. We receive nothing, except the great feeling of helping those who have served!
Being a Vietnam Veteran myself, i have truly never stopped serving my country, and i will till God takes my last breath from me. It is my duty, in fact we all have a duty to those, who provide the Umbrella of Freedom without thinking of themselves and dying for Freedom everlasting.
Yes we appreciate the Veterans old and young, it takes time , money and a willing heart! Thank you for your question. God Bless America!

Without a doubt!! These veterans are our sisters, brothers, best friends, neighbors. Inspite of the fact that we all may not agree with the concept of war, the people who are fighting it are truly loved; both young and old.

I appreciate anybody who is doing me a favor. And when soldiers are actually defending me, I am grateful to them.
But, in my opinion, that hasn’t happened since World War II, the last defensive war. I understand that some people in the military today are there because they want to help you and me, but not all. Some are there for the glory, the adventure, to emulate their fathers and big brothers and for a job. I can tell you that when I was in the Army, it was for me, not anybody else. I wanted the experience, the paycheck and the GI benefits. Don’t thank me, because I did not do it for you, even if I somehow benefited you. I never once thought of you.
And I’m sure there are many more like me in the military now. Some are there to protect America, but I do not believe that that is what they are actually doing in Iraq. What if I believe that they are making our world more dangerous? Should I be grateful that they are doing that? No. I don’t disapprove of them for that, either, just their Commander-in-Chief. But neither am I grateful for what they are doing. I do admire them because they are willing to do what they think it’s right and needed, and I fear for their safety. Also, I resent on their behalf the way that their own government will treat them when they get home – a betrayal of them by today’s uberpatriots. But none of that is gratitude.
And if I was grateful for what they were doing, I would be just as grateful to the taxpayers for subsidizing them.
So, I am supportive of those people, and feel for them, but not their mission or their leaders. And although I am sympathetic to the soldiers and sailors and all, I disapprove of what they have been sent to do, I am not grateful that they are doing it, and I resent being pressured by war mongers who I don’t like or respect to feel grateful for what I don’t approve of.

Yes, they do. But unfortunetly its the people who don't that receive all the press. For instance, that group that was protesting at the funerals of our fallen soldiers from Iraq. The local radio station had interviewed them, you want to talk about making my blood boil! I am a navy veteran myself, so you can understand why I felt the way I did when I heard them talking about why they do it. Apparently they claimed they were protesting because they were offended about gays and lesbians. So, they protested funerals because they hated gays and lesbians.
But, to all the veterans past and present, America does support you.

I think they do more so than they did during the Vietnam War. It was sad to hear and see troops actually getting spat on and called baby killers when they came home. It's gotten a lot better nowadays. If people don't appreciate their troops then maybe they should sign up and see what it is like.

It appreciates the veterans, which is why we have a national holiday honoring them.
