Let me get this straight about the bible:

If some of the bible is true, then we know the rest of it is true. For example, the bible mentions a real place called Hebron. Since we know that Hebron is real, we can assume that the rest of the places, persons, and events recounted in the bible are factual.

This would suggest that if I'm reading -- for example -- the Sherlock Holmes yarns, and if I find that they contain an accurate historical portrayal of the city of London, then that means that Sherlock Holmes actually existed.

Hmm. What are the chances of that?

I always believed that many of the stories in the bible are "based" on true events. But like any good movie based on actual events, It's not really true. Liberties have been taken with the story in order to meet the story tellers agenda.

Well, some people believe that about the Bible, and some don't. There have been many supposedly mythical places that some archaeologist has proven does exist (Like Troy, for example.) The best we can say is that if a place or event in the Bible is not known in extra-biblical sources, that it has not yet been found. Logically, we can neither deny nor affirm its existence. (Having said that, as ancient texts go, you will find that the Bible has a much better than average record of mentioning people, places, and things that have been proven to exist, and archaeologists in the Middle East are making new discoveries all the time.)

It is true only in this sense. Critics had made claims in the past that because certain areas of the Bible did not exist then the Bible must not be accurate and should be completely disregarded because it could not get something as simple as geography right. When those places where found it shows that the writers of the Bible did there research and shows that maybe other things are accurate.

For example before Troy was rediscovered it was assumed that the Trojan Wars and the Iliad were mostly false because we did not have the location that it happened in. Later when Troy was found it turns out that many things in the Iliad could be correct.

Is this ironclad proof? No, but it does lend evidence to support the possibility that it is true.

And i suppose Sherlock Holmes also speaks of a great crossing of the red sea that was often pointed out by critics as being impossible as the sea bed is far to deep. but years later a bizarre geographical anomaly was discovered in the form of what appears to be a pathway elevated high enough so that people could get animals and other such things across and then back up to the other side. I love how those Sherlock Holmes stories always fall into place.

it somewhat is rather not maximum appropriate. The Bible does not let us know the age of the international. we'd have a sturdy concept if the the advent occurred in 6, 24 hour days, yet a "day" interior the Bible normally refers to a quantity of time. this is likewise a partial answer on your 2d question. The Bible substitute into written by potential of prophets who lived in a life-style that used symbolism heavily. The Bible is done of expressions which could be understood symbolically and not actually.

We do not argue that the Bible is true simply because it mentions some real places. That would a very poor argument.
Some parts of the Bible are true exactly as they are written. Others need to be interpreted according to what type of literature the book is.
