The entire field of mental health and psychiatry is subjective, and the entire field experiences trends like any other. Although we would like to convince ourselves otherwise, psychiatry truly is a pseudoscience - we can't always explain why certain things work and why some don't.

However, I am skeptical of Dissociative Identity Disorder. Most people "diagnosed" with it normally have some form of a personality disorder. Many people with personality disorders can manifest dissociative symptoms, but the development of a completely separate personality due to total dissociation is a stretch.

I'm not saying it's not possible (again, psychiatry TRULY is subjective), I'm just saying I'm skeptical of it. What I think is a classic case of Borderline Personality Disorder the next clinician could see completely differently.

People focus too much on diagnoses - it's the symptoms of the client that are important, and how they are affecting the person's life.

Mild depression. Just because things depress you doesn't mean you have a mental disorder. Maybe people haven't noticed, but Earth isn't exactly Candyland. I think a certain degree of depression is a healthy and logical response to some situations. If you have a dead end job, no social life and you live in a run down neighborhood with sad, worn out people, I don't see how you couldn't be depressed. In fact, if you were happy I would say you were a liar or a masochist.

I wouldn't say that it doesn't exist, but I would say that it is definitely over diagnosed: Bipolar -- especially in children.

Strange thing is I have been diagnosed with Bipolar and I truly do thing that I am. It isn't just a matter of not being able to handle stress or the occasional ups and down of life, for me, I truly have no control over my emotions whatsoever. I can be perfectly fine one minute and then start to cry for no reason at all. The drastic mood swings are very scary and hard to handle. I have been taking medication now for 2 years along with therapy and I finally feel like I can handle my feelings much better.

Good question. My son has been diagnosed with everything under the son and nothing sticks. And NONE of the billion meds he has been on help even a little.

90% of Bi Polar diagnosis are simply people with bad coping skills.

I've been told I have Borderline Personality Disorder, and the frightening thing is that I believe it might actually be true to some degree. And I would consider it about the worse form of mental disorder in a funtioning human.
