When I buy PS3 games, how do I know if it is in the 1080p format for my HD LCD TV?

First you need to make sure that your HDTV supports 1080P and then you should look on the back of the PS3 game case to see what High Definition formats the game supports.

As long as you use a HDMI cable with your 1080P HDTV, the game should be displayed in 1080P as long as the game supports 1080P.

Also, on the PS3's main menu, if you go to Settings and scroll down until you get to Display Settings and click on Display settings. After clicking on Display Settings under Video Output Settings the current output resolution will be displayed.

If the current output resolution isn't what it should be for your T.V. connection, then click on Video Output Settings and select the correct connectors for your T.V. (HDMI, Component, etc...) and the output resolution will be what it should be for your T.V.

it should say its hd capability on the front cover of the game

On the back of the gamebox it must be listed.
