Pioneering heart surgeons Michael E. DeBakey, Denton Cooley and C. Rollins Hanlon are all still alive, I believe.

While in the military, DeBakey was a main promotor of the concept of M.A.S.H. units. He consulted on Boris Yestson, and will soon turn 100!

Cooley made many innovations in heart surgery.

So did Hanlon, but is best known for the atrial septostostomy performed for certain types of congenital heart disease, also known as the Blaylock-Hanlon procedure. He was a great educator, too.
