Wow. Pretty crappy pound to adopt out a dog without even a rabies vaccine!!!!!!!!!!
It is doubtful that he would have rabies, but I would not keep the dog either. I would give them a little piece of my mind when you take the dog back too!!!!!!

what pound adopts out animals without giving them rabies shots? I'm sure he probably does have a rabies shot.
To answer your questions: If the dog didn't break your daughter's skin, it can't transmit rabies. when you return the dog, let the pound know what happened - they will quarentine the dog for ten days to observe for any signs of rabies, just in case.
As for licking your mouth, I'm not sure if rabies can be transmitted that way (it is in saliva), but parasites can be transmitted that way, so it is not a good idea.

I have NEVER heard of an animal shelter that will adopt out a dog that has not had a rabies shot. Contact the shelter Immediately and check with them. If the dog really hasn't had a rabies vaccine, this shelter needs to be evaluated.
The only way to really test for rabies is for the dog to be euthanized, and sent to a a lab where they can test for it. The shelter should know to do this anyways, but if they are irresponsible enough to not give a dog his rabies vaccine before adopting him out, then I guess you never know. So be sure to ask about this. The only other way to test for it is for the dog to be completely quarantined for 10 days, and the shelter will observe him for any signs of rabies. If he doesn't show any signs, then he doesn't have it. If he does show signs, then he will be euthanized, and they will test for it.
I would also contact your family doctor about your daughter.

If you got him from the pound he had to have his rabies vaccinations. If she has no puncture wound or the skin wasn't broken, there is no bite. Remember the dog is new to the household. Did your daughter scare the dog? Did you introduce them properly. How old is your daughter? Is it a large or small dog. (Some things You should ask yourself, before returning the dog)
The dog is NOT rabid, don't worry

if he has rabies he will foam at the mouth and drink crap loads of water, he will not eat. the only way that it can be spread is from blood contact, so you should get your daughters wound tested for rabies. although, i think he was just an agressive dog. email me if you have any more questions about it!

No, you are not going to contract rabies from a lick. Dogs act like dogs, especially fresh from the shelter. If you are afraid of the dog that YOU picked out, you should hold off on adopting. It does no good to recycle dogs back into the system b/c you can't take the time to work with them!

I adopted my dog when he was a puppy and the Humane Society required we get the shot as soon as he was old enough. I don't think you can get rabies via a 'kiss', unless maybe you have an open sore in your mouth.

it is possible to get it but unlikely. the only way to tell is to have him under observation for at least 10 days. tell the pound that he bit your daughter, and they should keep him for ten days to see if he is positive for rabies, and that way you know to take your daughter in, or yourself for that matter, to get a shot for it. it's the cheapest, easiest way to see if he has rabies.
otherwise, symptoms of rabies is excessive drooling, listless walking, or walking in a hobbling kind of way like a drunk person would. these would only show up in the late stages of rabies.

What kind of a ****** pound sends a dog out without shots? Irresponsibity at its finest.
You can't tell if a dog has rabies. Its like aids, it could look fine right now and show signs in a week.

i would ring your local council for some information on what they can do to help you. dont leave your daughter and the dog alone not for even a second! never trust a dog 100 percent. leave the dog in your garden till you can take it back to the pound, or put it in some one elses garden till it can be taken back. the pound should have check that dog for many things like getting on with children before they let you take it,they havent done their job properly, you make sure you tell them what happend to your daughter so they dont let another family with kids take it home to bite them.
