During the time of Moses’ dialog with the pharaoh, Egypt went through a storm of a millennium. The archeologist have proven this since what I’m going to tell you will back that up.
The days before the first plague, there was major flood in Ethiopia and washed a lot of soil down stream. And guess what color the soil was (plague 1)? When the soil washed down, it killed off most of the fish in the river due to lack of oxygen causing the river to rot and drove all the frogs down the river on to the in lands (Plague 2). Of course all these frogs died off and dead fished washed ashore, naturally, massive number of gnats and flies appeared (plague 3 and 4). When you have cloud of flies they would suck on the livestock’s blood; thus, causing disease (plague 5) amongst the livestock. Unable to wash from the river, with swarming insects, naturally, people developed boils (plague 6). The unusual storm brought hail and lightning causing massive fires (plague 7).

Driven by the wind and the storm and the fire, locusts devoured the land (Plague 8). Like the calm before the storm, darkness came over Egypt. Some say it was the thick cloud, some say it was the thick smoke caused by the fire due to lighting down south or could have been both (plague 9). Obviously, people dying in the city must have to devastating. Egyptians relied primarily to grain, fish and live stocks, they have gone through starvation and disease and number of dead could have been staggering (plague 10).

777, good question. Remember the Israelites didn't live by the banks of the river. They lived in lands. Also, they didn't eat pigs but lambs. Lambs are more resistant toward gnats and flies.

Remember, a lot of myth comes from historical events. Some experts now say the Noah's arc is highly possible due to archeological findings of massive flood in that region.

Northstar, haven't you ever exadurated about anything. These ancient people didn't have scientific knowledge of climates, effects of oxygen in the water, effect of insects on the live stock, medical knowledge of how boil was caused. Many ancient allagory is based on real life fact. People intend to fill it with fantastic stories explain the unexplainable. Would you rather hear about climate movements and clinical studies on disease and livestock reports or story of God's mighty work?
