I recently adopted a Bichon Frise from an older relative who could no longer care for it....it is a sweet dog that my kids love, but it is peeing all over my house! My relative did not walk him, but let him pee on paper or wee-wee pads around the house. Now I know he needs an adjustment period...but I cant take cleaning up after him constantly! It has been almost four months....we walk him about 2-3 times a day, but he always waits until we get home and finds a corner or couch leg to do his business on. And lets not even discuss the poop...ughhhhhh!!! WHAT SHOULD I DO....I hate to get rid of him, but my kids are out of diapers...I thought I was done with this! Please help.....

I agree with Fido's answer, no rubbing nose in it, you can get quicker results with more updated techniques.

You may need to use the puppy house training techniques to conquer this.

Anywhere that the dog has urinated and any stains must be thoroughly removed with a commercial cleaner designed to eradicate all animal scent markings or with vinegar sprinkled on dry Bicarb Soda over the stain, let it fizz, sponge out and repeat until all trace is gone.

You might even consider replacing a few things that are not too expensive.

If you can get some soiled remnant then put that outside to establish an outside scent he will recognise.

Do not allow him the run of the house, he will need to be confined to just one or two rooms that have surfaces that can be easily cleaned.

Walk him after meals and every few hours take him out for a toilet break. Offer a good reward with praise or treats if he does his business outside.

You can teach an old dog new tricks, he does not understand since he was allowed to go inside in his previous home, so you need to be kind and careful to do this.

You might also try enrolling in an obedience training course to help get him to bond and respond to you better.

This may sound cruel but it worked for both my dogs. The minute i found a pee spot I stuck the dogs noes in it and said NAUGHT real sternly and put the dog outside and said you pee outside it took a while and the installment of a doggie door(very easy) after 2-3 months of keeping on top of it they
are trained! and to this day if they do have an accident I do the same routine as a reminder I also would take them out
right in the morning, and said go pee pee and made sure
they did and rewarded them! My sister does it another way
she keeps them in a dog cage when they go to bed and first thin in the am she takes them out to go. When she goes to work she locks them up again and does the same thing they are only allowed exercise when she get home from work
I think it is too cruel but it works for her! Hope this helps
The secret is consistency I know it will be hard but worth it in the end Good Luck!

Buy some wee-wee pads and put them OUTSIDE right by the door. Take your dog outside and show him the wee-wee pad - he might remember them and start going on the pads outside. After a while, get rid of the pads. (it might also help to take some of his poop and put it on pad outside so he can smell his scent outside, to further increase his association with pottying outside.
I personally hate those wee-wee pads, but since he was taught that way, I think this is your best bet - buy some and put them by the door outside.

Since the dog is used to going in the house
I recomend keeping the leash on the dog while inside, preferably in someone`s hand.
This way when he starts to look like he wants to go to the bathroom, he can be taken outside quickly and as soon as he starts to pee say go pee or go to it and when he is done tell him what a good dog he is. It took me 8 days to train my dog to do this. It is a drag having to hold his leash and look at him constantly, but it was worth it.
Hopefully since you have more people in your house, it won`t be as hard.

You are going to have to take him outside and take him out often. We used the bell system to potty train our dogs. Hang bells from the doorknob and ring every time you take him out to potty. My dogs caught on very quick. The key is to be consistant. You must take the dog out and wait for him to potty. If he doesn't, then you can bring him back inside but leashed to you so he is never out of your sight, then take him out again after a bit. Good luck...and don't rub your dog's nose in it like someone suggested.

Unfortunately... There is some truth to the old saying "You can't teach an old dog new tricks".
