I need something simple to use or tell me what to add to the icing.

I don't recall fruitcake having icing. Royal icing is SUPPOSED to get hard. You might want to try a butter cream or cream cheese frosting or perhaps just a glaze if you insist on having icing on your fruitcake.

I like almond paste on fruitcake. Or marzipan type icing. There's something about the almond flavor and the fruit cake that just seems to go together.

Cream Cheese Icing goes great with fruit. You might want to try adding some cream cheese....and I love royal icing also.Yogurt add some yogurt too. And, honey...yeah! honey. That sounds good.
