When you become ADDICTED to alcohol, THEN you are an Alcoholic. Consuming large quantities of booze causes both MENTAL and PHYSICAL health problems...
And like ANY addiction - there are serious withdrawal symptoms that a person goes through once they try to stop.
Support networks (such as AA) are OFTEN a neccessary step - as it is FAR to easy to fall back into old habits!

Alcoholics can't function they lose control of there life and there family. Most of the time people turn to the bottle as a way to self medicate because they are depressed. The drunk feeling is the only thing that helps them feel happy for a little till they sober up and feel worse.
Alcohol is a depressant it's self so for some one to use it to help with dealing with the pain is the worst thing you could to it just makes you feel worst.
It one thing to drink for fun its another thing to drink your life away.
" Alcohol the cure and cause of all life's problems. "

They have a serious addiction to alcohol -- both physical and psychological. If it were easy to quit, they would quit. Very few people like to be alcoholics. They fall into it by not stopping before the addiction is created; then they spend the rest of their life getting out of it or staying away from it. Pretty grim.

Your question seems a bit odd. That's like asking, "What is wrong with epileptics?" or "What is wrong with someone who is clinically depressed? " Alcoholism is an illness.

They have an addictive personality. It's just a disorder, and with rehab and the proper support they can overcome it. There's nothing wrong with them, no one is perfect.
