i was going to adopt a kitten from an organization and it took 2 weeks just to get approved to adopt a kitten from them since they have lengthy paperwork system and now today I find out the kitten that I have been waiting for and getting ready to come home is going to be put down along with its siblings and mother because they found out it has feline infectionitis I was so in shock and I'm crying so hard. I know its wrong of me for them to want them to live since the lady said that they would be in a lot of pain if and when it manifested but I cant help not wanting them to die. She said if the mother has it the babies most likely have it to and that they land up dying horrible deaths and thats why they have to put them down. does anyone know what this disease is. I tried looking it up. any links that you can find about it.. i would appreciate. thank you

thank you guys for answering. I feel better just reading about it because I had such a hard time believing the lady even though we were crying on the phone when she told me. I just couldn't believe it.

Hi Eleyana...Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) caused by the coronavirus infection. Sadly, it is a terrible disease that is excruciatingly painful and generally is fatal and incurable.

You can read and learn more about this in greater detail:

You got it a little wrong. It's feline infectious peritonitis, usually called FIP. You can google it "Cats - FIP" or the full name and come up with all the information you would need in order to understand why the kitten you chose is indeed doomed if she has it.

If they have confirmed a diagnosis, then the kitten is truly doomed. There are websites devoted entirely to it, and at some of the elite catteries in England, apparently, they have had a little success in battling it. But it is virtually 100% fatal, and the animals suffer with it.

I am so sorry this happened to you, but you really are fortunate to have gone to such a responsible shelter to adopt. No matter the shock you have now, they really may have saved you from real heartbreak.

FIP. cat version of HIV. it is bets to put them down because it is very highly contagious, and it's true that if the mother has it, most likely her kittens do too.

i work at a vet clinic and an FIP cat has a very rough life. even if you can afford all the medication and treatments it takes to keep them going once it manifests, the cat will not be a happy camper. it makes them very uncomfortable, they feel sick and tired, and achy all the time. most of them refuse to eat after a point and end up starving themselves.

it is for the best.

Been through FIP WAY TOO many times. It is a sad and horrid disease, and is fatal.
They really do suffer when they are sick, and it is not fun to watch.
At least know that they didn't suffer and that you didn't get attached and have to make the horrid decision.
