Or at least give us a nice deduction?
Look at all the $$$ we spend in the community & some is even taxable.
Just a thought & I was wondering what everyone else thought.

i have 4 children...so i get to claim them on my taxes every year. i clothe my kids, feed them, supply their school w/supplies at the beginning of the year, Karate lessons, hair cuts, dentist and eye appts. and doctor visits and medication when they are sick.
i clean after them, cook for them, help them learn new things, discipline them when they are bad, and praise them when they are good.
i provide a stable loving home for them.

If dog owners do the same for their dogs i do NOT see why they couldn't (or shouldn't) get a deductible for their time, energy and betterment of their community by raising and maintaining respectful animals.

Edit:
Leo- neither are children. yet we get earned income credit back...we could argue the same should be for pet owners.

pepy311- some ppl *that shouldn't have kids* have children for that same reason. should we then do away w/earned income credit..or just ban having kids?

**thumbs downer...kiss my butt!**

Our freedoms have taken a beating. Unfortunately, from some of the responses you have gotten, you can see how brainwashed most of the people are, they don't even realize that their constitution has been circumvented and their individual rights are being violated. The powerful interests that control this country and government have successfully divided the people along party lines, classic 'divide and conquer' stratagem. Both parties are mirror images of each other and are tied together by powerful interests. There will either be a revolt (doubtful), massive support for a third party (like libertarians) or (likely) we will just continue to sink into a quagmire of more government control, intrusion, and diminishing freedom. Our individual sovereignty will continue to erode, all under the pretext of 'the common good', until prosperity and creativity grind to a halt.

I think one day it will come down to it. Won't be anytime soon but one day I think it will happen. There are alot of us people who haven't had much luck in the fertility area and my dogs are the closest things to kids I have. And I spend a small fortune on their care and feeding. Why shouldn't I be afforded the same benefits as someone who is blessed with no fertility issues? I think just like with kids, there should be supported documents to prove the expenditures. I don't think people should be able to just mark yes and take the deduction. This would not make it easy for everyone to just own a dog and claim it. Just think ... how many years ago was it that everyone was thinking .... insurance for dogs?!!? That is ridiculous!! In the meantime, I will continue to wait and keep on loving my kids (or otherwise known as "fids" - furry kids!!) awaiting that day I can!!

Smiles!

My two dogs are expensive to keep healthy and definitely a parental commitment of sort--shots, food, flea and other treatments, treating injuries and care obligations when I go out of town, not to mention training love and discipline. If I was required by law to get them social security numbers and 12 years of education as well, I'd say "give me a tax break if I need to go that far". There are alot of people who don't treat their own kids as well as I treat my pets and they get tax breaks or even welfare checks for being irresponsible in how they manage their lives.

I think some people should get tax breaks for getting sterilized instead of having babies they can't take care of. If the government goes that far, then I'd say "Yes" to a pet deduction.

Owning pets is a luxury -- I'm not gonna say anything for fear the federal government will slap us with a luxury tax for owning pets. Can you imagine?

I'm with the others here who recommend a tax break for those who spay and neuter their pets. Can you imagine that?

I don't know about claiming them as deductions, but I think there should be a credit or an incentive for spay/neuter (since the overpopulation problem is a drain on government coffers).

I think vet care should also be deductible (at least in part) as an incentive for owners to actually get their pets taken care of.

That would be a very nice thing for one of our presidents to do...allow Americans to claim our dogs! Is that why voters are so interested in the pets candidates have and like candidates who own pets?? hehe

OMG, I have been praying for the day!!!! I spend more on my dogs each year than I do the kids. When you think about it I would have to pay the mortgage, elec, phone etc even if I didn't have the kids. Between the vets, housing, food , toys etc. that stuff really adds up. I wish!!!!

Figures the person with the cat avatar says dogs are not a necessity. Mine are!!!
