I leave a single coin to indicate that I am aware a tip is expected and to indicate the poor service. I have also left a brief note with a written tip suggesting better service for future customers a time or two for remarkably bad service!

If the service is terrible, I ask to speak to a manager, indicate what the problems were with the service and let him know that that is the reason that I will not be leaving a tip; the manager is generally grateful to be informed of incompetence (and for a waiter, poor service is incompetence, no matter what they are "going through"). If, however, the food, drink, or other things outside of the server's control are terrible, then I leave a tip based on the server's performance rather than on my satisfaction with the meal. My personal guidelines for tipping are:
Terrible service: Speak to manager
Poor service: 10-15%
Average service: 20%
Exceptional service: 25-50% (and possibly speak to manager)
One thing to remember if you are considering not leaving a tip. The management must ensure that all employees receive at least minimum wage. If they do not make minimum wage from their tips plus their base pay, the management must make up the difference. For this reason, if you are considering leaving an exceptionally poor tip, you should always inform the management of your reasons why, as they are the ones who will ultimately pay.

I start a little talk, when I ask for the bill, telling the waitor/waitress how bad the service is. This conversation would make me recognise the reason I got bad service; wether it`s a regular low level of service that person usually offers and therefore I won`t tip him/her, or it`s exceptional and so I would leave a good tip besides some nice encouraging words.

Waiters and waitresses can have a bad day too, just like the rest of the people. They are trained to do their job properly but sometimes, whether it's a demanding manager, dealing with different customers or just long hours, they might not be able to serve every table perfectly! I'd leave 15 % or more regardless the quality of the service. Remember, they make a living out of tips!

Yeah you tip them anyway and then you tell the manager if you feel that the terrible service was directed AT you. If the food was late or undercooked or she/he didn't check on you, sometimes there are extenuating circumstances you can't control...but if the waitress/waiter was RUDE, then you leave the expected 15% and report them. I work in customer service and I deal with cranky people all the time, and in order to do my job the best that I can, I provide that service with a smile no matter how shitty they treat me. Flipside, I won't bring my bad attitude with me to work, no one wants that, makes for bad business. You telling the manager just means you're helping their business to be better.

Yes, tip them 15-18%. That is the minimum. If you had a problem with their service keep in mind that there are several factors that may be tottaly out of their control. If, however, they really just gave you bad service, complain to their managment. When you go out to eat, you are paying for the food and the costs of running the resteraunt, not the service. The tip is a majority of their take home pay. However, if it was rude service, and not just poor service, take the issue to the manager and stiff the bum.

No, never. I only tip for standard (15%), above standard (20%) and excellent service (25-50%.) Terrible service gets nothing but a complaint card and a chat with the manager.

If the service is bad I usually won't leave a tip. If that is supposed to be their livelihood then they should learn to be better at it. If the service is horribly bad I will leave a noticeable tip such as 15 pennies to make a point that I was not happy with their service.

NO. I expect to be treated courteous and with respect, if that doesn't happen I will not leave a Tip. Now on the other hand I will tip on hoe the service was, anywhere from 15%-%30.

Coming from someone who used to work in the service industry, I would say yes - around 5-10%. What do you say is terrible service? Not having your drink refilled every two minutes? Servers normally work in 4-5 table sections - if everyone has a min. of 4 people in a group, that's around 20 people to make happy in a matter of a minute. Sometimes servers are busting their butt trying to please you but they're trying to do that for everyone. Remember servers make less than minimum wage - in Florida I made $2.90 an hour.
