I'm making a cream of tomato soup....and the recipe calls for finely chopped celery rip (which I don't have). Will celery seed suffice? I will ultimately end up blending the entire pot (with the heavy cream). Thanks!

It is hard to find. I buy it at my little hometown grocery store, but have a hard time finding it at the larger places. Keep looking or use 1-2 celery ribs, sliced thin. I admit I think I misread your question. are you making homemade canned soups, or are you just doing the dry ingredients in a jar? I wouldn't use celery seed. It is much to strong of a flavor. I think it over powers all other flavors you may have going on there.

stay away from the celery seed.. its a completly different flavor!.. the only thing you can substitute real celery is for celeriac. but the root is a really strong flavor and you have to reduce it by about 3/4... ex 1 cup real celery = 1/4 cup celery root

Celery seed is very strong. I don't think I'd use it in tomato soup. Maybe celery salt (which is ground seeds + salt). Or if you decide to do seed, maybe 15 of them.

You can try it, it will provide a different flavor though. Good cooks improvise with what they have on hand! It could turn out to be a great substitution for you.
