my puppy is 7 months old and 22 lbs, both cats are 12lbs. I have heard that you can buy flea treatment for one large dog and split it up between the 3 of them but i don't know how much I should give each and if this is a safe practice or not. Please help!

This was a rumor that I heard and just wanted Clarification. I would appreciate it if you did not attack my pet parenting skills. My animals only get the best of care! Thank You.

Get the biggest one you can buy, empty it all if your mouth, then give 2 licks to the puppy and 1 lick to each cat.

You obviously can't afford to keep them properly, talk to your local shelter.

No, do not do this. You'll only get the dose wrong.

Buy the correct flea treatment from your vet. They will give you the correct dose for the size of your dog, and a separate one for your cats. NEVER use flea treatment for a dog on a cat.

Do not ever use pet store treatments. Many are dangerous, and none work.

Only use products as directed. This rumour you've heard is false, and potentially harmful!

Cats and dogs may use products made by the same manufactures, even products that contain the same ingredients, but their systems are very different from each other.

Flea treatments actually contain pesticides/insecticides. I think everyone knows how dangerous insecticides are but not very many people realize that's what is in flea and tick treatments. Not something you want to mess around with when you're administering these to your pets.

The active ingredient may be safe for both cats and dogs, but what differs is the amounts each can have. It's not a total volume that can be measured out, it's the percentage per part of the active ingredient that is the difference.

Some treatments contain a pesticide called permethrin that is so toxic to cats, rabbits, and fish that vets recommend not even using it on dogs living in the same household.

Different brands repel and/or kill different parasites. They don't all guard against the same things so you'll need to do your research to figure out what is more suited to the area you live. For example, Advantage doesn't do a thing against ticks. In the area I live ticks are very prevalent so I wouldn't want to use Advantage. K9 Advantix repels and kills mosquitoes which are bad here but it is toxic to cats and I own two of them. Frontline Plus doesn't do anything to mosquitoes but it does kill ticks and fleas so its what I choose to use since I can't use the other two.

Also, it's not safe to use multiple repellents. You wouldn't want to combine a flea collar with a flea dip and a topic application b/t the shoulder blades. Combining stuff could cause overdose issues and actually poison your pets.

It is best to talk to a vet to ask what they recommend for your pets based on their medical history and based on environmental concerns for your local area.

Good luck with your fur crew! I'm sure with a little research you'll come up with a good solution!

Boy , you opened up a bucket of worms with that one :o) The only product you can buy that is safe for dogs and cats both is Advantage (NOT Advantix) You can buy a large size and split it between them , but you must use the correct amount for each animals weight. To do this, you need a 1cc syringe without a needle. Cats over 9 lbs get .8 (that's 8/10) of a syringe, so you measure to the number 8. Dogs 20-40 lbs get 2.0, so that would be TWO syringes measured to the number 1.0 each. Advantage has the exact same ingredient for cats and dogs. It is the ONLY flea product on the market that has the same ingredient for both. This could sicken or kill your cat if you do this with any other product. Check out this site for a kit and instructions for dividing. I do NOT sell this, and am in no way trying to make money from anyone,,,I just looked it up for you. I believe that you do not have to be rich OR a sucker in order to care for you animals correctly. You just have to research and have the knowledge to care for them without starving yourself :o)

It is not a rumor, it is a fact. Most people (on here anyway) just parrot what they hear, then repeat it forcefully, without doing any research at all. I did extensive research with the makers of all of the flea/tick/lice products on the market, as it was required where I worked. (Yes ...we were actaully tested on it) Most vets,,,and definitely Bayer, who makes advantage, would rather people never know, and I'm sure you can guess why.

No, you cannot safely divide flea medications between cats and dogs. The medicines are distinctly different for the two species. You could wind up losing one or more of your pets. I personally do not like the flea medications sold in discount stores and both Frontline and Advantix are expensive.

The most affordable flea medication right now is Bio-Spot. We have had great results with Bio-Spot and our animals have not gotten sick as my little dog did from Frontline.

This link will send you to a supplier that carries the medicine for both cats and dogs.

You get a three month supply in each box. So one box would give you one month for each cat plus and one extra. You would have approximately two dosages for your puppy depending upon weight. One for now and perhaps if he is larger (due to growing) you could use the other two together providing his weight has doubled. Otherwise you would still have three doses for him.

One way or the other, don't use any product meant for dogs on your cats.

Good luck!!!

do not put dog flea med. on cats it will kill them the best way is go to your local pet store and check all the labels, make sure they do not have pesticides in the stuff. I don't care if it does say it is for dogs or cats it will make them sick and can kill them. You can go to your local health food store and ask for Penny Royal herb tea make the tea and put some in the water and you will not have fleas. now if you are going to breed any of them you can't use it it will abort the babies. You can also get sink so soft by Avon and bath them in it and it will help kept the fleas off. Make sure you Rance of all the oil of the animal. If you have a big yard you might need to get fid of the fleas out of the yard.To get the fleas off the animals you can wash them in joy liquid. They best way is contact your local vet what will be the best for your animal. Good luck!

Do not waist you time or money buying flea treatment unless your pets already have fleas.
Buy some hamburger and some garlic powdered or chopped it does not matter just not garlic salt. sprinkle a fine layer of garlic on to the hamburger and feed it to you pets.
once a week you do not need to give them large amounts.just about a ball of hamburger the size of a bouncy ball.
Garlic is safe for your pets and it is proven to prevent fleas and ticks so does yeast. These treatments have been used by dog breeders for centuries and they do work very well.
Also a lot of cats and dogs both have allergic reactions to flea treatments and the flea treatments are only made to work for short periods of time.there for causing you to spend more and more money on them.

Dogs can't have cat flea treatment, and cat can't have the dogs flea treatment ..

And, with that small of a dosage for each being, I'm sure that the fleas will just get high off of it .. Lol. I don't think it will kill them.

Don't use the same flea medicine on your dog and cats. Get one pack for your dog, and one pack for your cats. They're dosed by weight, so you can get one pack and use it for both your cats.

Most flea meds are sold in in packs with 1-3 individual dosage tubes. You can find flea meds at your Supermarket, Pet Store, ect.

Never put flea stuff for a dog on a cat. It could kill them. Break down and buy the right stuff. Your pet's lives could depend on it.
